Purpose of Announcement
EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER.
This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Department as they occur.
Kind of Work
Position consists of responsible supervisory work involving the chemical treatment and filtration of large quantities of water intended for human and industrial consumption. An employee in this class supervises all operations of a large purification plant which includes the filtration and chemical treatment units. Duties include responsibilities for a safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all equipment and for the quality and quantity of water produced. Employee assigns tasks to operating and maintenance assistants, and keeps necessary clerical and production records. Employee supervises the operation, maintenance, and repair of all equipment used in the purification of water. Performs related duties as required. Employee drives to and from various locations throughout Jefferson Parish in order to perform job tasks. This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.
Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination
Must meet one of the following:
I. Current employment with Jefferson Parish and permanent civil service status as a Water Purification Operator; PLUS, at least two (2) years of experience in water purification plant operations AND possession of a Class IV Certificate in Water Treatment issued by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.
OR
II. At least three (3) years of experience in water purification plant operations; PLUS, possession of a Class IV Certificate in Water Treatment issued by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.
PREFERRED: Operator Certification(s) in Water Production and/or Water Distribution issued by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.
Related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate.

Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked.

An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their
dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of
the premiums for dependents.
A Flexible Benefits Plan
Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health
insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings
Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.
Retirement
Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees' Retirement
System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after
January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service
is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with
10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.
Tenure Payment
Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year.
Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.
Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan)
Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer
up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings.
Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without
penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions .
Special leaves of absence for military service, maternity leave, etc.
