The Special Education Paraeducator supports students with diverse learning needs by providing academic, behavioral, and personal assistance under the direction of certified staff. This position plays a vital role in fostering an inclusive, safe, and positive learning environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist with implementing individualized education or behavior plans.
Work closely with students, teachers, the school nurse, and staff.
Maintain a safe and caring environment.
Maintain confidentiality, keep records and data current, and prepare and supply reports as needed.
Consult with and assist special ed. teacher in working with students, as needed.
Work with individual or small groups of students as directed by the classroom teacher.
Supervise students in community-centered or optimal learning environments.
Before commencing employment, professional training will be provided as required. Competencies and Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
High school diploma or equivalent (per State of CT requirements).
Fingerprinting and background check as required by the State of Connecticut.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records and information.
Ability to lift 25+ pounds and meet the physical demands listed above.
Basic computer skills (email, data entry, and use of learning software).
Willingness to participate in required professional training. ?Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
Experience working with students with special needs or challenging behaviors.
Knowledge of child development and positive behavior support strategies.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive rapport with children and to work collaboratively as part of a team. Physical Abilities and Working Conditions:
Vision: Can read small print and view a computer screen for prolonged periods.
Hearing: Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions.
Speech: Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone or computer.
Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist, and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.
Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry objects that weigh as much as 25 pounds or more frequently. May be required to assist in safely managing behaviors in accordance with district-approved training and protocols.
Physical Demands: The ability to sit for long periods (at a desk and on the floor), kneel, bend at the waist, run, and walk.
Physical Stamina: The capacity to perform a range of support responsibilities, including, but not limited to, transferring and lifting, feeding, and cleaning for all areas of health, function, and hygiene with students who have significant needs in those areas.
Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors. Working Conditions: This is a 10-month position (180 days), 6.5 hours per day (8:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.)
