Job Summary
Technical and responsible work patrolling the City beach to provide the safest possible conditions for beach patrons. Includes rescuing swimmers in distress, administering first aid and basic life support, providing on-scene emergency care and transport of patients, informing the public of City Ordinances, and general maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
High school diploma or equivalent; higher education a plus.
Experience
Previous Ocean Lifeguard experience preferred.
Significant verifiable ocean lifeguard experience or U.S. Military Rescue Swimmer (e.g., USCG Rescue Swimmer) may be substituted for the lifeguard certificate.
Licenses / Certifications
Valid Florida Driver's License.
Nationally recognized lifeguard certification (American Red Cross, YMCA, United States Lifesaving Association).
American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer or American Heart Association Health Care Provider.
Must pass required swim & rescue skills test, physical, and drug screening.
Key Competencies
Knowledge of water safety rules and regulations.
Ability to establish rapport with the general public, fellow workers, and supervisors.
Physical Requirements
Sedentary work to extreme labor-intensive work based on rescue situations.
Physical abilities include swimming, running, walking, standing, sitting, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pulling, pushing, climbing, lifting, hearing, talking, and seeing.
Outside work under all weather conditions.
Occupational hazards include possible exposure to communicable diseases, bites/stings from marine life.
Additional Information
Work Days: Monday - Sunday including holidays (must be available annually for four of the following
holidays - Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's
Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, & Labor Day).
Must submit 10 days/month of availability, including two weekends
September - March Work Hours: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. (EST)
March - September and 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. (Daylight Savings Time)
Hours may vary; no more than 50 hours for every two-week pay period.
