POSITION OVERVIEW

This position will be responsible for the execution of facility maintenance and testing activities in high-voltage transmission substations. The position will have an emphasis on substation and protection and control (relay) equipment. The apprentice will be able to perform basic tasks associated with system equipment repair and maintenance as well as provide technical assistance and oversight to contractors. Maintenance and testing activities include but not limited to air switches, gas circuit breakers, transformers, reactors, relays, meters, battery banks, and telecommunications. The apprentice will be responsible for the safety, work quality, and proper tracking and reporting of completed job tasks. Additionally, the apprentice will be enrolled in WETT's four-year apprentice program once onboarded.

This position will be located in Big Spring, TX, and will report to the Field Operations Supervisor.

DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for either directly performing or overseeing contractors performing the following work associated with all relay and substation equipment: installation, maintenance, testing, adjusting, troubleshooting, repairs, and switching.

Monthly, quarterly, bi-annual, and annual system inspections.

Safely operate various types of equipment, bucket truck, aerial lift, skid steer, forklifts, etc.

Perform diagnostic testing and analysis of test results on protection and control, and substation equipment.

Responsible for maintaining WETT vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working conditions.

Check, verify, and prepare routine reports.

Comply with WETT safety and environmental policies.

Participate in an on-call rotation.

Participate and complete four-year apprentice program administered by WETT. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School diploma is required.

Associate's degree in an electrical field is preferred but not required.

This position will be required to participate in WETT's apprenticeship program.

Skills and Experience:

This is an entry level position; however, previous experience and/or internship in the electric utility or electrical contractor industry is preferred.

General understanding of electrical equipment such as circuit breakers, switches, relays, and transmission line components.

General knowledge of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and how it relates to the electric utility.

General understanding of transmission line systems and how they relate to the electrical grid. Preferred to have knowledge in of maintenance standard practices, techniques, and applicable codes and standards.

Ability to adapt to changing technology.

Ability to work in an outdoor environment for extended periods of time.

Must be able to sit, stand, kneel, or crawl for extended periods of time.

Must be capable of lifting in excess of 50lbs.

Must be able to work independently and with others.

Must be a self-starter with a positive attitude.

Willingness to work overtime or long hours during when needed. Schedules can change frequently and with short notice.

Must be capable of working in close proximity to energized substation and transmission line equipment.

Ability to use a multi-meter to troubleshoot electrical problems.

Ability to read and decipher electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.

Certificates & Licenses:

OSHA 10 and/or 30 may be required in the future and encouraged for advancement.

Computer Skills:

Ability to use and quickly comprehend computer-based systems utilized for content management, data entry, data tracking, and work processes.

Ability to use and quickly comprehend functionality of various test equipment.

Microsoft Office (Excel, Power Point, Word, Access).

Competencies:

Strong communication skills.

Organization of information, assigned tasks, communications, and data.

Documentation and tracking of critical information.

Time management. JOB PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

Progression will be reviewed with supervisor based on department needs, growth, and progression in the apprenticeship program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The majority of the work will be performed outdoors, and the applicant must be capable of working in that environment for extended periods. Must be able sit, stand, kneel, and operate a motor vehicle for extended periods of time.

Other Physical Requirements: Applicant must be capable of wearing all personal protective equipment including but not limited to- safety toed boots, long sleeved FR clothing, safety glasses, hard hat, high visibility vests, and gloves. There will also be occasional overnight travel to the corporate office in Austin, TX and to various trainings.
