Description
Under close supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), provides basic nursing care and performs non-professional services in caring for the personal needs and comfort of elderly and/or chronically ill patients in a hospital, health or institution setting.
Duties and Responsibilities
Transports patients using wheel chairs
Takes and records patient's height
Assembles equipment and supplies
Serves and collects food trays
Answers call lights and bells to determine patients; needs
Maintains and updates patient's charts
Bathes, dresses, undresses
Assists in giving pre-operative and post-operative care
Collects specimens for the laboratory
Checks and stocks supplies as needed
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of the twelfth (12) school grade of its equivalent; plus, possession of a certified nursing assistant certificate from an accredited institution.
Position Factors
Knowledge of simple nursing principles, practices, and techniques.
Knowledge of first aid techniques and procedures
Knowledge of pertinent rules, regulations, policies and procedures, equipment, and supplies used in administering simple nursing care.
Knowledge of sanitizing and disinfecting procedures.
Ability to recognize the need for and initiate basic life support measures
Ability to administer simple treatment and medication.
Ability to follow oral and written instruction.
Ability to maintain emotional stability and performance level when exposed to physical devastation of other human beings.
Ability to maintain records and charts of patients' symptoms and progress
Ability to relate with tact and understanding to patients doctors, nurses, and members of the hospital or institution staff.
Ability to read and write
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with all concerned during the course of work.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Work is assigned through oral and written communication which tend to be detailed in nature initially, but as the employee become familiar with the routine duties involved, instructions become more general, with detailed instructions required only for non-typical, new, difficult or unusual aspects of the work. Work is reviewed for compliance with established policies practices and procedures.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines consist of established rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Written and oral guides provides specific instructions for performing most of the duties involved and generally little interpretation is required. When instructions do not apply, the problem is referred to the supervisor.
COMPLEXITY
Work involves responsibility for recording patients' vital signs, applying ice packs and hot water bottles, collecting charts, records and reports serving and collecting food trays feeding, bathing, and dressing patients, answering call lights, and assisting in giving pre and post-operative care.
Generally, facts and conditions are clear-cut and directly apply to the problems or issues at hand. After considering the facts,the employee takes the obvious course of action.
SCOPE AND EFFECT
The purpose of the work is to provide for patients' personal needs and comfort in a hospital or institution setting. The work contributes to patients' comfort and the smooth efficient operation of the hospital or institution by assisting the professional practitioner in the delivery of quality care to the hospitalized patient.
PERSONAL CONTACTS
Contacts with co-workers, patients, physicians, nurses, employees within other activity centers of the hospital or institution and friends and relative of patients. Contacts may be in-person or via telephone.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
The personal contacts involve exchange of information pertaining to the condition of patients, clarification of assignments, and delivery of measures. Some persuasion may be necessary in dealing with hostile and/or uncooperative patients.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work involves much walking, lifting, carrying, bending pushing, pulling,reaching, and prolonged standing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a hospital or institution setting; wears a surgical mask,gloves and/or gown and uses special aseptic techniques when providing personal and nursing care to patients with contagious diseases.
