Job Summary

Under the command of the Chief Deputy, Captain and direct supervision of a Lieutenant, Sergeant or Deputy - Corrections Officers Assistants perform a variety of duties to ensure safety and security of the Calhoun County Correctional Facility Complex.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Cognitive Abilities

Makes verbal or written reports of significant violations or irregularities to deputies and supervisors.

Communicate effectively using jail radio communication devices as needed.

Communicate verbally and effectively by listening to people and giving information, directions and commands. Directing people to deputies or supervisors for answers as needed.

Possess basic writing and grammar skills to complete intelligible written and verbal reports.

Exercise independent judgment within legal guidelines, when supervising inmates and enforcing rules. Asking supervisors or deputies for guidance when needed.

Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies and procedures to ensure appropriate officer behavior and response while performing their duties.

Possess ability to multi-task while maintain awareness of surroundings in high stress environments. Physical Requirements

Enforces rules of conduct and security, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraint equipment as necessary. Routinely assists with or conducts inspections of their area of control by climbing stairs and walking long halls, reporting any discrepancies to supervisors.

Controls inmate movement and monitors inmate activity in outdoor exercise yard, housing units, corridors and work areas as needed.

Escorts individuals or groups of inmates to work assignments, court staging, intake, disciplinary cells or other activities as needed.

Responsible for assisting or conducting regular documented count of inmates assigned to the area as required.

Inspects or assists with inspections of housing areas, dormitories, jail grounds, work locations and other facilities for unauthorized objects or materials. Requires ability to stoop, bend or kneel on concrete floors.

Inspects or assists with inspections in the inmate housing units sanitary and safety conditions (fire alarms/panic alarms).

Assists in averting riots and escapes and further assists in physically suppressing any riots or escapes undertaken by inmates.

May assist in the supervision of inmates on transfer to other correctional facilities or on appearance in court. Accompanies inmates being transferred top psychiatric diagnosis or to treatment clinics, attends sanity hearings in a courtroom or hospital.

Perform tasks that require lifting, carrying or dragging people or heavy objects while in the course of their duties.

May be required to stand for long periods of time.

Work rotating, twelve-hour shifts, weekends and holidays up to the maximum allowable casual employee hours.

Perform other essential tasks as identified by the employing agency.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED

No Felony convictions

Must possess a valid Michigan Driver's License

Must be a US Citizen

Must be previously certified as a state or local corrections officer.

Must be willing to work some weekends. NOTE: This position is a casual (at will) position limited to 36 hours every two weeks with no additional benefits.

Working Conditions

Work includes frequent exposure to noise, occasional exposure to fumes and or odors and periodic exposure to dust and dirt.

Work includes occasional contact with chemicals and toxins.

Work includes periodic contact with infectious disease and periodic threat to bodily injury.

Intermittent cyclical work pressures are occasionally experienced.
