Job Title: Law and Public Safety Teacher (CTE) for 2026-2027

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary:

The Law and Public Safety (LPS) Teacher is responsible for providing high school students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue careers in law enforcement, emergency services, and related public safety occupations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the field and will utilize research-based instructional strategies to prepare students for industry-recognized certifications and postsecondary education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Apply knowledge of law, law enforcement, and public safety principles to guide students toward a career in the field.

Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that follow the MDE's Law and Public Safety Curriculum Framework.

Lead students to acquire and maintain industry-recognized certifications, such as the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) Trainer Certification and National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications (ICS 100.b, 200, 700, and 800).

Integrate industry standards from the Board on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Training (BLEOST) and National EMS Education Standards into the curriculum.

Provide a safe, orderly, and hazard-free learning environment conducive to effective instruction and classroom management.

Develop connections with industry professionals to facilitate service-learning, cooperative education, and work-based learning opportunities for students.

Assess student performance using a variety of techniques, maintain accurate records, and enforce school/district rules and regulations.

Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and serve on school committees as required.

Advise and support student organizations and competitive events related to law and public safety.

Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications & Experience:

Education: An earned associate degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education in Criminal Justice, Emergency Medicine, Political Science, Social Science, or a related field approved by the MDE program coordinator.

Experience:

For applicants with an associate degree: A minimum of three (3) years of verifiable occupational experience in a law enforcement or public safety related field within the last ten years.

For applicants with a bachelor's or higher degree: A minimum of one (1) year of verifiable occupational experience in a law enforcement or public safety related field within the last ten years. Licensure/Certification:

Ability to obtain and maintain a Class "A" Mississippi Career and Technical Education (CTE) licensure with a 912 Law and Public Safety endorsement upon hire.

Possess and maintain a Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) Trainer Certification.

Possess and maintain NIMS certifications: ICS 100.b, 200, 700, and 800. Professional Development: Must enroll immediately in the Vocational Instructor Preparation (VIP) program and complete an individualized professional development plan prior to the expiration of the initial three-year license (if applicable).

Additional Requirements:

Must pass a criminal background check and child abuse registry check.

Must validate technology competency by achieving the minimum score on an MDE-approved assessment such as IC3.
