Overview: Under the general supervision of the Production Manager, the Painter performs all the tasks required to paint a bus from start to finish. Painters will prepare fabricated bus body surfaces and exterior parts, including Step Frames, Emergency Doors, and Handicap Doors. Paints bus bodies and exterior bus body parts with multi-color finish coats as required by the production work order. The Painter inspects areas to be painted to ensure that the finish coat will meet specifications, then follows applicable painting procedures to apply the finish coat. The incumbent inspects his/her work for any defects and corrects as needed, and maintains personal safety devices, painting tools and equipment in proper operating order. Painters must maintain a clean and orderly workspace and be able to operate with little supervision.

General Responsibilities:

Functions as a senior member of the paint department

Train department employees

Assist in corrective action and process improvement initiatives

Follows prescribed paint department procedures

Preps and cleans unpainted bus body or unpainted external parts to be painted

Checks entire bus body for any defects and repair as needed

Apply body filler and seam sealer as needed

Cleans the paint booth and all paint spraying equipment and tools used in the painting process

Maintains all personal protective equipment.

Performs preparatory work as follows:

Inspects vehicle and components for defects and performs repairs

Sand and/or grinds unfinished vehicles and components of defects and then mixes and applies fillers to make repairs

Sand, scuff and clean surfaces to be painted

Apply masking and tape prior to paint

Prepares and applies primer and paint

Combination of office and shop environment.

Exposure to elements such as dust, odors, oil, fumes, heat, cold, chemical, metal shavings, and noise.

Regularly required to sit or stand, reach, bend, and move about the facility.

Occasional lifting of items not exceeding 50 lbs.

Minimum:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment

Demonstrated ability to perform body work, sanding, and metal prep

Demonstrated ability to properly operate and maintain paint equipment

Demonstrated skill to apply both primer and topcoat paint.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED

1 - 3 years of related experience and/or training; or

Equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience in Production, or Light Manufacturing desired

Preferred but not required:

3+ years' experience refinishing vehicles and automotive collision repair

Vocational training in collision repair

Associate degree in related field

ASE Certification
