Applications for the Lifeguard Instructor position at Three Oaks Recreation Area are currently being accepted.

This is a seasonal supervisory position at the Three Oaks Recreation Area, which assists with the daily operation and supervision of the beach. The Lifeguard Instructor will be responsible for training lifeguard staff two to three times a week.

This seasonal position is typically scheduled to work Memorial Day through Labor Day. Hours of work are of course weather dependent; however, it is our goal to schedule this position 40 hours of work per week. This position is also required to work a portion of the holiday weekends, which include Memorial Day, Father's Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in staff supervision, training, inventory, and the ability to demonstrate leadership in operations is preferred.

The successful candidate must possess or be able to obtain their Lifeguard Instructor Certification issued from the American Red Cross prior to May 9, 2026. Candidates seeking their Lifeguard Instructor certification must obtain written pre-approval from the City before enrolling in the required course. Upon successful completion and after 30 days of employment, the City will reimburse the employee for the pre-approved Lifeguard Instructor Certification Course.

Work is normally performed without direct supervision and an individual must be able to exercise independent judgment in meeting various situations. This position reports to the designated staff in the City Manager's Office and supervises seasonal employees. Will also function as a rotating lifeguard for all activities at the Three Oaks Recreation Area.

Examples of Essential Duties

Some essential job functions include:

Assists with the planning, organizing and scheduling of beach work shifts along with the supervision of employees engaged in water safety operations, general operation, and customer service functions of the Three Oaks Recreation Area.

Ensures lifeguard staff is effectively trained through lifeguard drills.

Operates support craft on the lake during open water swims or swimming events. Monitors lake and weather conditions, via observation and weather tracking applications. Assists marina staff in the event of a lake emergency.

Assists in reporting regular evaluation of employee capabilities and behaviors to the designated staff in the City Manager's Office; trains and instructs personnel in job practices and methods of work.

Assists with supervision of employees, coordinates and inspects work activities to ensure that schedules are met and that work is performed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with standard operating practices and procedures.

Assists with the coordination and supervision of all functions at the beach. Coordinates the opening and closing of the beach and the swim breaks, if necessary.

Assists preparing the beach for operation, including installation and removal of the buoys and lines, movement of the lifeguard stands, and cleaning of the beach area.

Assists with first aid and/or water rescue situations throughout the facility.

Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the beach, spray park and playground area.

Assists in performing and documenting American Red Cross inspections.

Assists with the collection, issuance and care of all beach rental equipment.

Assists with the planning, development and evaluation of public and employee safety issues at the Three Oaks Recreation Area. Regularly inspects the grounds, buildings and equipment to ensure safe conditions and reports deficiencies to the appropriate staff and enforces facility rules.

Provides effective and efficient customer service and promotes and maintains responsive community relations.

The successful candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, have technical skills in various software programs, and be detail-oriented with multi-tasking capabilities in a fast-paced environment. Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to deal tactfully with the public and a high level of integrity in dealing with sensitive information is essential.

Supplemental Information

Personal Watercraft training and water safety course must be completed upon employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, swim, talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle or operate objects; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with the appropriate assistance of proper equipment or team lifting techniques, in accordance with City safety protocols.

Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This position will regularly work in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
