The role

As a Programmes Shipbuilding Lead – Safety & Environmental, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll provide leadership and technical expertise to ensure our naval shipbuilding projects meet rigorous safety and environmental standards. From hazard identification to authoring technical documentation, your work will influence designs that protect lives, safeguard the environment, and support national security. Day-to-day, you’ll have the following responsibilities:

Lead and deliver professional safety and environmental engineering support across design, build, launch, and trials.

Develop and maintain hazard logs and facilitate hazard identification and review meetings.

Author technical documentation such as Ship System Safety & Environmental Case Reports.

Provide guidance and support to the Safety Engineering Group on assessments and cases.

Chair technical meetings and ensure compliance with safety and environmental requirements.

This role is full time and is a hybrid role with 2 days onsite and 3 days working from home.

Essential experience of the Programmes Shipbuilding Lead:

Engineering background with experience in safety and environmental assessment/management processes.

Ability to compile and author high-quality technical reports.

Skilled in chairing and facilitating technical meetings.

Awareness or experience of techniques such as SWIFT and HazOpS.

Qualifications for the Programmes Shipbuilding Lead:

Ideally degree-qualified in an engineering discipline (extensive relevant experience considered).

Preferably hold Defence Maritime Regulator’s SEMT or SSMO certification (training can be arranged).

Membership of a relevant institution (e.g., IExpE, IMechE, RINA, IET, SARS) and Chartered or Incorporated status (or working towards).

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
