Cybersecurity Specialist
Pay Grade: G14

Reports To: Information Technology Director
The Cyber Security Specialist is responsible for protecting the organization's information systems, networks, and data from cyber threats, vulnerabilities, and attacks. This position plays a critical role in implementing, monitoring, and maintaining security measures to ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of all digital assets. The Specialist works collaboratively with the IT team and other departments to respond to security incidents, ensure compliance with relevant regulations, and promote a culture of security awareness.
Primary Responsibilities
Implement, monitor, and manage security systems, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), security information and event management (SIEM) tools, and endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions.
Conduct regular vulnerability scans, assessments and penetration testing to identify and address security weaknesses in systems and applications.
Lead and participate in security incident response activities, including investigation, containment, eradication, recovery, and post-incident analysis.
Develop, update, and enforce cybersecurity policies, procedures, and best practices across the organization.
Perform security audits and risk assessments to ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, HITRUST, NIST, SOC 2, ISO 27001).
Provide security awareness training and education to employees to minimize human-related security risks.
Stay current with the latest cybersecurity threats, trends, technologies, and vulnerabilities, and recommend appropriate security controls.
Collaborate with IT infrastructure and IT operations staff to implement security controls, patches, and configurations and ensure security is embedded in the design and implementation of new systems and applications.
Monitor security alerts and logs for suspicious activity and potential breaches, taking immediate action as required.
Manage access controls and identity management systems, ensuring least privilege principles are applied.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
3 years of experience in a dedicated Cybersecurity role.
Preferred Requirements:
Master’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Relevant industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CySA+, CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker), GIAC GSEC.
Skills
Proven experience in a cybersecurity role, with a strong understanding of security principles, protocols, technologies, and vulnerabilities.
In-depth knowledge of common attack techniques (e.g., phishing, malware, DDoS), mitigation strategies, and defense mechanisms.
Proficiency with various security technologies, including Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems, Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions, firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and vulnerability scanners.
Familiarity with industry-standard cybersecurity frameworks (e.g., NIST, HITRUST, SOC 2, ISO 27001) and regulatory compliance requirements (e.g., HIPAA, HITECH Act,).
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex security data and respond effectively to security incidents.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Relevant industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), CISSP (Associate), or similar.
Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team.
Commitment to continuous learning and staying updated with the latest cybersecurity trends and threats.
Working Conditions
Traditional office environment with standard business hours.
Occasional travel may be required for meetings, training, or conferences within the region.
May involve some flexibility in work schedule in accordance with organizational policies.
May occasionally require extended or weekend hours to meet organizational needs such as maintenance/upgrades, system issues, or respond to emergencies.
