Automation & Controls Engineer

Location: Columbus, OH

Position Summary

We are looking for an Automation & Controls Engineer to join our expanding internal automation team. This role is for someone who digs into root causes, not just symptoms - someone who drives long-term improvements rather than just firefights day-to-day issues. You will be heavily involved in PLC programming, HMI/SCADA design, and process control optimization, particularly on Rockwell systems.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, maintain, and optimize PLC code using Studio 5000 (ladder logic, FBDs).

Design and deploy HMI/SCADA systems using FactoryTalk View SE/ME.

Configure and manage Batch control systems using FactoryTalk Batch, following ISA-88 standards (area models, phases, recipes).

Troubleshoot DCS (Distributed Control System) issues, identify root causes, and implement long-term solutions.

Lead or assist in commissioning and startup of control systems (new or modified).

Support electrical design, instrumentation, and networking tasks on occasion.

Collaborate cross-functionally to enhance process control and automation.

Provide training and technical support to DCS users.

Define and enforce programming standards and best practices.

Contribute to strategic automation initiatives and long-term planning. Required Qualifications & Skills

Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Computer Engineering.

3-6 years of experience in industrial automation & controls.

Proficiency in Rockwell Automation platforms:

Studio 5000

FactoryTalk View SE/ME

FactoryTalk Batch

Excellent problem-solving skills, including diagnosing and resolving control system issues.

Ability to own projects, work independently, and collaborate across teams. Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

Experience with PlantPAx control systems

Vision system integration (e.g., barcode scanning, inspection)

Packaging automation or downstream equipment automation

Knowledge of data historians (e.g., PI Historian) or visualization platforms

SQL-based data reporting

Experience with Ignition (Inductive Automation)

Background in batch or chemical processing Compensation & Benefits
