School District Position Description

Position Title: Boiler Mechanic

Classification: Teamsters Local 429

Reports To: Director of Facilities and/or their designee

Hours: Variable Hours

Position Goal: To ensure that all boilers are operating safely and efficiently.

Position Rate: $27.69 per hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties may be assigned.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties:

1. Maintains and repairs boilers and burners.

2. Opens, cleans and prepares boilers for annual inspections.

3. Opens, cleans, repairs, and maintains all burners in proper operating condition.

4. Reports any/all unsafe conditions to supervisor.

5. Maintains all condensation pumps and condensation systems in proper operating condition.

6. Cleans, maintains, and repairs all boiler chemical feed systems as necessary.

7. Repairs, replaces, and lubricates all heating pumps on hot water heating systems.

8. Replaces or repacks main valves at boiler which may be leaking with plumbers as necessary.

9. Works with plumbers, electricians, and Johnson Control personnel as required to maintain DHW systems.

10. Works with plumbers as necessary to locate, replace or repair faulty steam traps or heating system leaks.

11. Tests the operation of burners, associated electrical systems, safety devices such as flame failure safety, low water cut-offs, C02, 02, and smoke levels for efficiency %.

12. Maintains proper chemical levels as required and instructed by current chemical company personnel in boilers, closed systems, air conditioning systems.

13. Consults with outside contractors for major boiler repairs such as retubing, gas train replacement, etc. gas train replacement, etc.

14. Makes daily check of EMS printout sheets and be capable of operating EMS computers.

15. Set up annual inspections for all equipment.

16. Reads blueprints.

17. No extra fees for permits from city or state.

18. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee. This job description does not constitute an exhaustive list of responsibilities and management may revise it at any time.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED). Experience working with boilers required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Pennsylvania Operator's License and City of Reading Trades License.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, wiring diagrams and technical and procedure manuals.

Ability to communicate scope of work and plans of actions to management, building administrators, custodians and maintenance personnel.

Ability to complete work order forms, time sheets, and other departmental forms.

Ability to plan, measure and layout jobs.

Ability to communicate clearly and distinctly. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts utilizing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Ability to compute areas, circumference, length, width, depth and volume.

Ability to calculate percentages discounts and total costs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to collect/compile information to determine appropriate course of action.

Ability to adapt to unforeseen field conditions.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram or schedule form.

Ability to work as a member of a team.

Must be courteous and able to deal effectively with people.

Must be cooperative, congenial and service-oriented.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the methods, procedures, tools and equipment of the maintenance trades assigned.

Knowledge of applicable local, state, and national codes and regulations.

Ability to perform assigned tasks and oversee the work of semi-skilled personnel.

Ability to make independent judgments and decisions within established policies.

Ability to learn the content of and skill in interpreting and applying work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacture's manuals.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, balance; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, perform work overhead and work from ladders and scaffolding. Work involves exposure to unpleasant elements, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions, and may include the use of protective gear. The employee must frequently move and/or lift up to 100 pounds such as materials and equipment. Specific vision capabilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to hear conversations in noisy environments. The employee must be able to drive all district vehicles. The employee is responsible to provide for the safety and well being of those within the immediate vicinity of where the essential functions of the job are being performed.

The work is performed inside and/or outside and includes being exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, high humidity, loud noise, vibration, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards and chemical hazards. Some positions assigned to this classification may be required to work an evening swing shift on an ass needed basis. (This requirement will be in accordance with seniority and all premiums pertaining to shift differential as specified in the current bargaining unit agreement.)

As per terms and conditions set forth in the contract between the School District of Reading and the Teamsters Local Union No. 429.
