Position Overview
The Safety Services Officer supports a safe, welcoming environment for all who visit NVMM. This position maintains a consistent presence throughout the museum and grounds to monitor safety conditions, respond to incidents, and provide professional, guest-focused support. By remaining attentive, approachable, and solutions-oriented, the Safety Services Officer helps ensure positive visitor experiences while safeguarding museum staff, guests, and property, serving as both protector and ambassador to reinforce NVMM’s reputation as a trusted and respectful community space.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Safety and Security Prescence
Provide visible patrols and maintain a professional presence throughout the museum and grounds.
Monitor security systems, cameras, and alarms; respond promptly to unusual activity.
Assist in ensuring all guests have safe, positive experiences while visiting NVMM.
Emergency Response
Respond to medical emergencies, security incidents, and facility alarms.
Follow established emergency procedures and assist with evacuations when necessary.
Complete incident reports accurately and promptly.
Guest Interaction and Support
Serve as a first point of contact for guest inquiries related to safety and security.
Provide directions, assistance, and reassurance to guests and staff in a courteous manner.
Support museum events and programs with crowd management and safety oversight.
Team Collaboration
Work closely with fellow Safety Services Officers and report directly to the Manager of Safety Services.
Participate in safety drills, training sessions, and ongoing professional development
Communicate effectively with Facilities, Museum Operations, and other departments to ensure seamless operations.Qualifications
Military Veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses are encouraged to apply. Required
1–3 years of experience in security, public safety, customer service, or related field
Strong situational awareness and sound judgment under pressure
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to remain calm, professional, and courteous during emergencies or conflict
Ability to work effectively with diverse audiences, including guests, staff, and vendors
Ability to follow established policies, procedures, and emergency protocols
Successful completion of a background checkPreferred
Experience working in a museum, cultural institution, public venue, or hospitality environment
Formal security training or coursework (e.g., public safety, emergency management)
Prior experience completing incident reports or documenting safety concerns
Familiarity with security systems (e.g., CCTV, access control, radios)
CPR, First Aid, and/or AED certificationWork Environment and Physical Requirements
Hybrid environment, including office, museum public spaces, and occasional outdoor settings
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs
Occasional exposure to varying temperatures and weather conditions during outdoor activities
Must be able to remain alert and attentive during prolonged periods of activity
Must be able to operate security and emergency equipment as needed
