Equine Ranch Hand Job Description
Part Time (20 hours average per week, with fixed days of the week. Hours per week can flex up or down, with a max of 30 hours per week)
Pay Rate: $20 per hour
Reports to: Director of Equine
Summary The Equine Ranch Hand position is a part time role (15-30 hours per week). The Ranch Hand will assist with group rides with clients and report daily to the Director of Equine for a task priority list for Ranch duties.
The Farm Hand position is a primarily outdoor environment and will frequently need to lift up to 50lbs. The role requires a good working relationship and communication between all members of the Equine department to coordinate priorities around the horse barn. The worker is responsible for completing labor and maintenance tasks as assigned by the Equine Director as well as supporting the operations of the Equine Department. Duties may include joining as support staff in trail rides with clients, assisting in saddling, grooming and exercising therapy horses, cleaning and repairing tack and saddles, running errands for supplies, bringing in horses for the farrier or veterinarian, and using the tractor, hand and power tools to maintain the riding arena, nature trail, paddocks, and barn. The worker will be educated in and held to specific standards of safe and effective handling and management of the therapy animals. Outstanding customer service and willingness to be of service are essential in this position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Equine Ranch Hand has a willingness to learn: Safe handling and management of horses and a desire to learn best practices in equine care and paddock maintenance. Basic understanding of equine common health issues and how to proceed when they occur. Willingness to comply with equine equipment safety standards and how to correctly attach and use equipment. Ability to assess a situation and choose the safest options for all then follow through on instructions. Willingness to assess a horse’s emotional needs and vocalize the best ways to proceed for the safety and wellbeing of the horse as well as the rider.
The Equine Ranch Hand will be asked to: Treat clients with dignity and respect and direct clients to Direct Care staff in a professional compassionate regulated manner. They will learn to recognize when a client needs help regulating and ask for support from direct care staff. They must maintain high HIPAA standards and will learn basic de-escalation and regulation strategies. They need the ability to communicate with the equine and maintenance teams about maintenance obstacles and preventative measures.
Additional Skills the Equine Ranch Hand will utilize include: Keeping up with relevant emails, understanding company hierarchy and communicating across departments when appropriate, the ability to have professional and appropriate interaction with the clients, and the willingness to complete ongoing supervision and training in horsemanship as well as annual compliance trainings in abuse, neglect and exploitation, nonviolent crisis intervention, and emergency response.
