The role

As a Trainee Nuclear Control Engineer, you’ll be at the heart of operations that keep our Royal Navy’s nuclear submarines mission ready. This is a unique opportunity to develop specialist skills in high-voltage electrical systems and nuclear safety, while contributing to projects that protect national security. You’ll gain hands on experience, work alongside industry experts and build a career that truly matters.

Day-to-day, you’ll ensure continuity of all essential services to nuclear submarines and the support of nuclear facilities across the DRDL estate & the tidal X-berths.

Manage and monitor an extensive high-voltage distribution network, including control rooms and substations.

Ensure essential electrical supplies to nuclear submarines are maintained and operated safely.

Oversee control rooms and plant houses for monitoring and controlling HV and LV systems.

Safely undertake switching duties for routine operations, commissioning, and maintenance.

Support the testing and maintenance of backup systems critical to submarine operations.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard. You’ll work a rotating shift pattern covering days, backs and nights. Once fully qualified, you’ll receive RA120 – a 40% allowance – for night shifts.

Essential experience of the Trainee Nuclear Control Engineer

Knowledge of safety procedures for HV and LV switching operations - Desirable

Previous experience promoting safe control of work on HV systems - Desirable

Strong stakeholder engagement skills - Desirable

Proficiency in MS Office applications - Desirable

Qualifications for the Trainee Nuclear Control Engineer

Level 3/ONC or equivalent in Electrical Engineering.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) / Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
