Job Description
The Microbiology Clinical Manager is responsible for the oversight of the Microbiology department including patient result reporting, quality control, quality assurance, and compliance with accreditation standards.
Responsibilities and Duties
Maintains technical and supervisory competency in Microbiology and ensures ongoing and documented competency of departmental and generalist staff members.
Responsible for Microbiology department personnel scheduling and coordination with other Clinical Lab departments to ensure effective staffing coverage.
Provides supervision for direct reports including performance evaluations, goal planning, and performance improvement.
Performs, delegates, and/or oversees departmental training for new hires and ensures completion of training checklist.
Participates in talent acquisition in conjunction with WMC Lab Leadership and Valley Health System (VHS) Human Resources.
Serves as subject matter expert in Microbiology and contributes to strategic planning for intradepartmental and interdepartmental initiatives.
Evaluates and implements new technologies in conjunction with intradepartmental and interdepartmental team members.
Performs, delegates, and oversees equipment maintenance; ensures maintenance is completed on schedule and with appropriate documentation.
Resolves technical and department operational problems and ensures appropriate corrective action is performed and documented.
Provides departmental support for LIS, Quality Assurance, and Education initiatives in conjunction with other team members.
Maintains adequate inventory of supplies to ensure continuity of service.
Collaborates with appropriate personnel regarding Microbiology testing performed on multiple platforms in other VHS departments.
Reviews and revises procedure manuals according accreditation standards; creates new policies and procedures when indicated; communicates policy updates to appropriate staff.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science is required.
Experience
(5) years of Microbiology experience required, or (2) years of experience as Microbiology Supervisor is required.
Certification & Licensures
ASCP or equivalent board certification is required.
Qualifications
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
Ability to mentor/supervise staff required.
Demonstrate knowledge/competency in providing service to patients of all ages including neonate, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric required.
