Job Description

The Lower School Librarian empowers young learners to explore, inquire, and create by fostering a culture of reading, curiosity, and responsible information use. The librarian partners with teachers, students, and families to cultivate lifelong learners who are critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical digital citizens.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited (or equivalent) program.

Preferred: certification as a school librarian and/or completion of a teacher preparation or education program.

Key Responsibilities

Literacy and Reading Advocacy

Inspire a love of reading and promote diverse voices, genres, and perspectives.

Guide students in developing comprehension, critical thinking, and a lifelong relationship with books and stories.

Partner with teachers to integrate literature and reading strategies across content areas.

Plan and facilitate reading events, author visits, and celebrations that cultivate joy in reading and strengthen the school’s reading culture.

Information and Digital Literacy

Teach students to locate, evaluate, and use information ethically and effectively.

Develop students’ skills in media, digital, and AI literacy to support critical inquiry.

Model responsible technology use and digital citizenship for all learners.

Collaboration and Instructional Partnership

Collaborate with teachers to design inquiry-based, transdisciplinary learning experiences.

Collaborate with teachers to integrate information literacy, digital citizenship, and research skills into the curriculum.

Provide professional learning for faculty on resource curation, literacy strategies, and emerging technologies.

Program Leadership and Administration

Lead the continuous improvement of the library program through strategic planning and alignment with school goals.

Curate and manage a diverse, high-quality collection in print and digital formats.

Maintain an inviting, flexible, and inclusive library environment that supports curiosity, collaboration, and creativity.

Manage the library budget and supervise support staff or volunteers, as applicable.

Professional Engagement and Advocacy

Serve as an active member of the school’s professional community and relevant library associations.

Advocate for equitable access to resources and intellectual freedom.

Communicate regularly with students, staff, and families through digital and print platforms.
