Job Summary

The core engineer uses code to connect data from back-end systems to a variety of endpoints and process data for financial systems. May create domain APIs for service engineering. An engineer is responsible for understanding business problems, designing, developing, configuring, testing, and deploying software to provide the solution. Engineers most often use Agile techniques and are a part of a larger, cross-functional team. Depending on the team, an engineer's responsibilities may be building pipelines, building test strategy, building cloud environments to be used in part of the development processes. The engineer's responsibility is to ensure the delivery of the software is high quality and automated as much as possible. Our current ecosystem is heavily based on a combination of Azure App Services and legacy mainframe. This position has a pivotal role in our modernization efforts as we move to an AWS microservices architecture. Successful candidates must have deep technical knowledge and demonstrated success working in a collaborative environment across diverse teams.

Essential Job Functions

Utilize the software development lifecycle to implement technology solutions that create and enhance applications. Inspect, analyze, and translate functional and non-functional requirements into technical design, application code, and configuration parameters. Produce design specifications, including screen layouts, graphical user interfaces, and printed outputs developed for self and others. Convert technical design and specifications into functioning components through the development of application code and configuration. Provide technical on-call support as defined within team and role expectations.

Create and execute unit tests to ensure issues are proactively identified within the software development lifecycle. Analyze code to identify causes of errors and defects. Remediate known errors within development and production support contexts. Review application code for self and others. Define, support, and enforce code standards and guidelines relevant to the applications and technologies being supported. Estimate and size work based upon high-level requirements. Continuously improve applications and processes with a focus on quality, efficiency, and user experience.

Cultivate relationships across roles and organizations to maximize collaboration, partnership, and efficiency. Provide peer coaching and feedback formally and informally. Request and utilize feedback to foster personal development.

Expectation is to be proficient in at least two and ideally three programming languages (e.g. COBOL, Java) and develop or maintain at least three applications.

Work autonomously, providing technical supervision to peers while demonstrating appreciable business knowledge within the general financial services and marketing domains. Strive to influence the team to generate support to achieve desired business outcomes.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Normal office environment. (Remote or Hybrid), 3 to 4 days per month are required in office if within 60 miles of a posted Bread Financial location

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or related area

7+ years of related work experience

More than 10 years of experience in a related field

Advanced technical experience designing and implementing scalable, resilient, and performant high-volume cloud-native microservices

Tech leadership experience modernizing tech stacks to the cloud, preference of mainframe to AWS or similar transformation effort

Direct experience decoupling monolithic applications, direct tech leadership and or significant hands-on development

Salary Range (unless otherwise noted below): $134,400.00 - $278,200.00

Full Salary Range for position:

California: $154,500.00 - $347,700.00

Colorado: $134,400.00 - $292,100.00

New York: $147,800.00 - $347,700.00

Washington: $141,100.00 - $319,900.00

Maryland: $141,100.00 - $306,000.00

Washington DC: $154,500.00 - $319,900.00

Illinois: $134,400.00 - $306,000.00

New Jersey: $154,500.00 - $319,900.00

Vermont: $134,400.00 - $278,200.00

Bread Financial offers medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, and other voluntary benefits (including basic and optional life insurance, supplemental medical plans, and short and long-term disability) to eligible associates (regular full-time associates scheduled to work 30 hours per week or more) and their spouses/domestic partners, and child(ren) under the age of 26. New associate elected coverage begins on date of hire (with the exception of disability coverage which has a 6-month waiting period). Six weeks of 100% paid parental leave for eligible parents is available after a 180-day waiting period. Hired associates can immediately enroll in Bread Financial's 401(k) plan.

All associates receive 11 paid holidays. Associates have discretion in managing their time away from work through the Flexible Time Off (FTO) program and may need to notify and receive approval from their manager prior to taking the time off. Associates (except those located in Illinois) receive 80 hours of Paid Sick and Safe Time ("PSST") upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year. Illinois associates receive 40 hours of Illinois PSST upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year and 40 hours of Illinois Paid Leave upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year. Illinois Paid Leave must be used before associates in Illinois will be approved to take FTO.

Hired associates will be able to elect the purchase company stock during offering periods in June and December. You will be eligible for an annual incentive bonus based on individual and company performance.
