About the Position
The City of Wilmington is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Service/Safety Coordinator in the Department of Public Service. This position plays a vital role in coordinating essential city services, including construction and maintenance projects, cemetery operations, indigent burials, animal welfare, and related administrative programs.
The coordinator supports the Director of Public Service by ensuring compliance with safety regulations, managing grants and permits, and serving as a key liaison between city departments, contractors, and the public.
This is a classified position, and candidates must successfully complete a Civil Service Examination to be considered for hire.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate a variety of public service operations, including construction, maintenance, cemetery, and transportation activities
Serve as the City’s Grant Manager, preparing applications, tracking budgets, and managing compliance and reporting requirements
Review permit applications, coordinate right-of-way and street closures, and oversee planning and zoning support functions
Serve as Planning Commission Clerk, preparing public notices, agendas, minutes, and reports
Coordinate cemetery operations, including indigent burials, recordkeeping, and family coordination
Oversee payment of departmental bills and manage data tracking, statistical analysis, and efficiency processes
Conduct BCI and FBI fingerprint background checks and collect associated fees
Act as Building and Zoning Official in the official’s absence
Provide basic IT and website analytics support for department programs
Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance and comply with all applicable OSHA and PERRP safety standards
Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or at least four (4) years of experience in administration or public service, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
At least four (4) years of experience in a combination of zoning, planning, records management, and code enforcement
At least two (2) years of clerking experience in a public sector or non-profit organization
Licenses and Certifications
Must obtain an Ohio Notary Commission within six (6) months of appointment
Must obtain LEADS Level One Certification within one (1) month of appointment
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Strong administrative, analytical, and organizational skills
Knowledge of local government operations, grant management, and public records procedures
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general office equipment
Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate effectively with citizens, officials, and contractors
Professional written and verbal communication skills
Work Environment
Primarily office-based with occasional site visits to field locations and meetings
Exposure to standard office chemicals (e.g., toner, correction fluid)
May have contact with emotionally distraught individuals or potentially hazardous situations
Regularly exerts up to 20 pounds of force and occasionally up to 75 pounds
Classified as light work under U.S. Department of Labor standards
Compensation and Benefits
Starting Pay: $26.86 per hour
Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, paid leave, and participation in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)
