Overview
System Engineering Architect at Ryder System, Inc. The Systems Engineering Architect is a senior technical leader responsible for the design, standardization, and strategic oversight of Ryders infrastructure platforms across on-premises and multi-cloud environments. The role focuses on architecting resilient, secure, and scalable infrastructure solutions that support high-volume, mission-critical business applications. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in VMware-based on-premises architecture, infrastructure security, and cloud migration strategies. This individual collaborates with Enterprise Architecture, Security, and IT Operations to ensure infrastructure designs align with business goals, compliance requirements, and operational excellence.

Essential Responsibilities
Infrastructure Architecture Leadership: Define and maintain enterprise infrastructure standards across compute, storage, virtualization, database, and security domains. Ensure alignment with industry best practices and Ryders requirements.
VMware On-Premises Expertise: Lead design and optimization of VMware-based infrastructure (vSphere, vSAN, NSX, Horizon). Ensure high availability, performance, and scalability of on-prem workloads while planning lifecycle management and modernization.
Platform Design & Integration: Architect hybrid infrastructure solutions that integrate on-premises systems with public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, OCI, GCP). Ensure interoperability, workload portability, and consistent policy enforcement across environments.
Infrastructure Security Architecture: Collaborate with security teams to embed security-by-design principles. Define controls for identity, access, encryption, segmentation, and vulnerability management across on-prem and cloud.
Cloud Migration Strategy: Lead assessments and develop migration roadmaps for moving workloads to the cloud. Evaluate dependencies, cost models, and security implications for successful transformation.
Architecture Governance: Develop and enforce enterprise-wide infrastructure patterns, blueprints, and reference architectures. Govern adherence to standards across IT initiatives.
Solution Enablement: Partner with application and business teams to enable scalable infrastructure solutions supporting digital transformation and automation.
Lifecycle Management: Oversee the full lifecycle of infrastructure technologiesfrom evaluation to retirementensuring cost-effectiveness, security, and operational readiness.
Strategic Planning: Contribute to long-term roadmaps and capacity planning. Provide architectural input for major programs, M&A integrations, and enterprise initiatives.
Risk & Cost Analysis: Evaluate proposals for feasibility, cost, risk, and resource impact; provide recommendations balancing innovation with stability.
Documentation & Communication: Develop and maintain architecture diagrams. Communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Additional Responsibilities
Lead infrastructure portfolio management, including roadmap development, standards governance, and lifecycle planning.
Research and recommend emerging technologies aligned with enterprise architecture and business strategy.
Collaborate across business units to identify infrastructure needs and provide architectural direction for future-state solutions.
Conduct risk assessments and gap analyses to identify vulnerabilities and improvement areas.
Provide first-level review of vulnerability assessments and support remediation planning.
Participate in vendor evaluations and contribute to contract and SOW development for infrastructure services.
Support compliance initiatives by ensuring designs meet regulatory and audit requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned to support enterprise IT strategy and operations.
Skills and Competencies
VMware Expertise: Deep hands-on experience with VMware technologies (vSphere, vCenter, vSAN, NSX, Horizon); ability to design, scale, and secure enterprise-grade virtualized environments.
Cloud & Hybrid Infrastructure: Strong understanding of Azure, AWS, OCI, GCP and hybrid integration; experience with workload migration, cloud landing zones, and hybrid networking.
Security Architecture: Knowledge of security principles including zero trust, segmentation, encryption, IAM, and vulnerability management.
Technical Breadth: Proficiency in servers, storage (SAN/NAS), backup, patching, monitoring, and disaster recovery.
Strategic Thinking: Ability to align infrastructure architecture with business goals and enterprise strategy.
Decision-Making: Data-driven decision-making balancing innovation, cost, and risk.
Collaboration & Influence: Ability to build partnerships across IT and business teams; comfortable influencing without direct authority.

Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
Masters degree preferred in IT or related field.
Eight or more years of relevant IT experience required.
Proven experience diagnosing and resolving complex issues; ability to implement strategies to resolve problems.
Strong experience with infrastructure tools, methodologies, and processes.
Experience consulting to identify needs, define project scope, plan, and estimate costs, effort, and duration.
Experience using analytical skills and tools to investigate information and draw conclusions.
Experience with enterprise architecture standards, processes, and tools.
Experience with IT operations technologies (servers, SAN, monitoring, backup, patching, DR, ITSM); advanced level recommended.
Background in IT security, including risk, vulnerability management, and best practices; advanced level recommended.
Proven experience in a technical support group and with technical project management; advanced level recommended.
Understanding and experience delivering IT operations services; advanced level recommended.

Compensation & Benefits
The compensation offered may be influenced by factors including experience, education, location, market data, internal equity, and salary ranges. May be eligible for an annual bonus or incentive plan. Pay type is Salaried.
Minimum Pay Range: $130,000.00
Maximum Pay Range: $150,000.00
