We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to support our Fire Protection Engineering operations. The Fire Engineering Specialist Intern will assist (under direct supervision) with fire/safety related projects that involve the planning, design, application of code compliant equipment, construction, operation and maintenance of fire protection and life safety systems. Incumbents in this position are responsible for assisting in/and or the performance of the following duties, or duties of a similar nature, under direct supervision.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Update, maintain, and index fire protection engineering records, drawings, and files.

Perform hydraulic calculations, code compliance reviews, and detailed engineering studies using applicable fire protection standards.

Participate in fire risk assessments and hazard identification.

Develop, test, modify, and document fire protection design standards and spreadsheets.

Prepare cost estimates for fire protection system design, installation, and maintenance projects.

Visit project sites, facilities, and supplier locations for inspections, acceptance testing, and system evaluations/troubleshooting.

Research and compile data on fire codes, standards, and best practices.

Assist in training sessions.

Collaborate with emergency response teams and other departments including AEP’s Risk and Insurance Group.

Qualifications:

Currently pursuing a degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

Basic understanding of fire prevention principles and safety codes (e.g., NFPA, IBC, IFC, FM Global).

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) AutoCAD or MicroStation.

Willingness to learn and take initiative.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience in fire safety or emergency services (volunteer or paid).

Familiarity with NFPA standards and OSHA regulations.

CPR/First Aid certification.

What You'll Get:

Intern Student Engineer: Pay is commensurate with education hours.

Minimum: $25.00/HR

Mid-Point: $30.00/HR
