Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class provides clerical, administrative and program support for the Town's Parks and Recreation staff in support of services and programs including public contact, janitorial maintenance, and clerical duties. Work includes serving as receptionist, assisting public with information and enrollment in programs and center membership, taking fees, scheduling rooms, setting up rooms for programming, word processing, data entry, filing, relaying information, assisting with programming and records maintenance work. Work is performed under regular supervision and reports to the Parks and Recreation Superintendent.; works closely with and responds to requests of Recreation Leaders. Work is evaluated through observation, feedback, conferences, and the quality, timeliness and effectiveness of individual and team performance objectives.
Note: In accordance with G.S. 160A-164.2(b)v, the selected candidate must complete a fingerprinting and SBI records check. The selected candidate may not begin work until results are received.
Illustrative Examples of Work
Assists Recreation Leaders in the designing, implementing and supervision of activities, events and programs
Provides customer service by performing a variety of roles such as receptionist for community center and department; answers phone and assists callers or visitors with a variety of information about programs, center activities, fees, program requirements and rules, etc. Registers participants for programs and events; collects fees and completes proper forms; handles complaints and issues from the public; utilizes Rec Desk; checks equipment in/out and conducts orientations
Inputs information into an automated system such as data base, word processing program, or other systems or software to create rosters, schedules, enroll participants, take and record program and user fees or other documents; reviews and verifies records
Performs custodial and janitorial tasks as required ensuring health and safety of participants and others
Conducts routine building rounds ensuring facility standards are maintained
Performs administrative / clerical work as required, including cash control, preparing reports and correspondence, copying, filing, designing flyers, marketing activities and other clerical or administrative support duties
Develops and maintains positive working relationships with the public, other staff members, or co-workers and leadership
Performs related duties as required

Physical Requirements:
Work in this class will exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires the frequent use of tools, machinery, facility equipment, office computer, cell phone and other office equipment. The employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time with occasional bending or squatting. Employee should be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Employee must have the visual acuity to perform frequent reading, to prepare and analyze data and figures, close-up work, and ability to distinguish color and depth vision.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a typical temperature-controlled office environment subject to typical office noise as well as noise from operating vehicles and recreational programs, exercise equipment or other program facility noises. This position also requires working outside in extreme temperatures, working with tools and equipment, moving heavy equipment/supplies, position has some exposure to hazardous chemicals and bloodborne pathogens. Work may occur during evening hours or weekends. Work that brings employee in contact with bloodborne pathogens may subject the employee to compliance with OSHA standards and blood borne pathogens. Employee must use personal protective equipment as required. This position has been deemed Safety Sensitive.
Education/Experience/Special Requirements
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in recreation management, exercise science, physical education or a related field preferred.
Experience
One year of prior work experience in park and recreational programs with some secretarial or clerical experience involving public contact and document production, preferred.
Special Requirements
Valid North Carolina Driver's license, preferred.
CPR, AED and / or First Aid certifications preferred.
Immunization against bloodborne pathogens is indicated for this position.
Employee required to successfully complete the NIMS course work applicable to the position within one year
