Job Description:
The Defense Investigator plays a vital role on an interdisciplinary legal team, supporting attorneys in building strong, client-centered defenses. This entry-level position offers hands-on experience in investigative techniques and trial preparation. Under the guidance of the Investigation Practice Supervisor (IPS), lead attorneys, and experienced staff, the Investigator will learn and apply skills in fieldwork, document review, interviewing, and case management.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with attorneys, social workers, client advocates, and fellow investigators to develop case strategies.
Maintain consistent communication with team members and clients to track case progress, clarify investigative needs, and prioritize tasks.
Interviewing
Learn and apply techniques for interviewing clients, witnesses, law enforcement, and other relevant parties.
Field Investigation
Serve subpoenas to individuals, businesses, and agencies.
Document crime scenes through photography and video.
Collect and review physical and forensic evidence.
Document & Records Review
Obtain and organize records (medical, educational, criminal, etc.) relevant to the case.
Analyze discovery materials to support defense theory and strategy.
Assist in creating working documents such as witness lists and social histories.
Case Management
Develop skills in organizing electronic and physical case files.
Track case details using Salesforce and shared drives.
Maintain thorough documentation of all investigative activities.
Trial & Hearing Support
Assist with trial preparation, including exhibit creation, subpoena service, and witness coordination.
Learn courtroom procedures and testify accurately when needed.
Preferred Experience:
Prior experience in public defense is a plus but not required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be 18 years or olde
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver's license and proof of insurance
Reliable access to a working vehicle

Compensation: $48,000 annually + medical, dental, vision, life, FSA, and 401k with 4% employer contribution.
