Jump Recruitment Specialists has partnered with Oceanex Inc. in their search for a full-time permanent, Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) Coordinator based at their terminal location in St. John’s, NL.

THE ROLE:
Reporting to the Safety, Security & Compliance Manager, The HSSE Coordinator monitors and continually improves the safety culture of the Terminal and Inland operations by working with unionized and non-unionized staff to foster an enhanced relationship and education. This position supports all activities associated with Health, Safety, Security & Environmental programs and initiatives in Oceanex land-based operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee all aspects of incident prevention and loss control for Terminal and Inland operations including inspections, safety tours, competency evaluations, equipment management, hazard assessments, etc.
Coach workers on safe work practices and procedures
Supervise contracted security group
Advise staff and management on health and safety regulations and best practices
Oversee compliance program and carrier safety
Advise operations personnel on updated policies and procedures in the company’s SMS
Assist departmental managers and supervisors in the completion of initial incident/accident reports
Conduct incident and accident investigations, as assigned
Assist in the continued development of a positive HSE culture by reviewing/validating job hazard assessments and safe work procedures
Coordinate and conduct Safety and Security drills and exercises in support of Programs
Respond to off-site safety, environmental and compliance incidents, when required
Support the management of Oceanex Hazard and Safety Recognition Programs
Conduct workplace inspections and internal audits of management systems, as assigned
Advise supervisory personnel of OHS procedures, standards and guidelines
Inventory control of safety equipment for operations
Working with third party providers on inspections of operational equipment
Answer internal and customer inquiries related to Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Cargo Securing systems and other NSC non-compliance items
Support Oceanex Road transportation department staff in the implementation of corrective actions identified from reported hazards, incidents, regulatory amendments and quality service initiatives in road transportation compliance
Assist in the management and execution of Oceanex Environmental Management Program to meet regulatory requirements with the aim of achieving best practices within the organization
Respond to environmental and compliance incidents when required
Assist in the coordination and execution of the Oceanex Emergency Response Program
Assist with conducting workplace HSE Orientation training for employees and contractors (initial and refresher)
Assist in managing workplace injury, disability and WHSCC case management (reporting, ESRTW Planning, monitoring)
Actively participate in the JOHS Committee activities
On a rotational basis, be on-call to respond to HSSE issues that arise during off hours
Assist in compiling and tracking weekly and monthly safety statistics and trending data
Perform other duties within the operations and compliance departments as required or assigned
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Post secondary education from a recognized institution in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent combination of experience and education
Knowledge of Provincial and Federal safety regulation.
A minimum of 3-5 years of HSE experience in an industry setting
Experience working in a union setting
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Experience working with claims management
Strong work ethic
Ability to work as a team player as well as independently
Excels in a fast-paced work environment
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent problem solving skills
Formalized training in auditing of accredited management systems (an asset)
Experience working in the transportation and cargo shipment industry
