Position Title: Design Technician Location: Sterling, VA Position Status: 6-Month Contract-to-Hire Pay Rate: $24-$26 per hour (based on experience) Position Overview We're looking for a motivated Design Technician to join our engineering team in Sterling, VA.
This entry-level opportunity is ideal for someone with strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and a desire to grow in the utility or power distribution field.
You'll work closely with experienced engineers and designers to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective electrical infrastructure for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
This role offers hands-on training, mentorship, and exposure to industry-standard design tools and field operations - a great steppingstone for anyone pursuing a career in electrical or civil design, GIS/CAD, or utility engineering.
Key Responsibilities * Support engineering staff in designing and preparing job packages, including drawings, material lists, and labor estimates.
* Apply company, client, and regulatory standards to ensure safe and compliant designs.
* Participate in field visits to verify site conditions and interact with construction crews.
* Utilize design software and work management tools to develop and track project deliverables.
* Learn to evaluate electrical loads and recommend appropriate transformers, fusing, and protection.
* Maintain organized project documentation and provide regular progress updates.
* Collaborate with mentors, engineers, and other departments to meet project milestones.
* Uphold all safety procedures and company policies at all times.
* Perform additional duties and training as assigned to support career development.
Qualifications Education * Required: High school diploma or GED * Preferred: Associate's degree or higher in a related technical discipline (Engineering, Drafting, GIS, Electrical Technology) * Preferred: Bachelor's degree in science, math, or business-related field Experience * 0-1 year of experience in power distribution, GIS/CAD, or utility design/construction * Exposure to drafting, field verification, or electrical design tools a plus Skills & Abilities * Strong communication and problem-solving skills * Basic understanding of algebra, geometry, and spreadsheet calculations * Ability to read and interpret technical documentation and maps * Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS, or similar software preferred * Excellent organization, time management, and multitasking skills * Valid driver's license and reliable transportation * Willingness to participate in storm response or after-hours work when required Work Environment & Physical Requirements * Primarily office-based with occasional outdoor field visits * May involve exposure to varying weather conditions and moderate noise levels * Ability to sit, stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs * Regular use of computers, phones, and design software About Seneca Resources At Seneca Resources, we're more than a staffing and consulting firm - we're a career growth partner.
