Senior Engineering Manager – CMS and SI Sanitisation

The Engineering Function within Maritime Naval Ships is pleased to announce this Leadership role to deliver the sanitisation of CMS and SI products on two UK MoD platforms to enable UK MoD to complete export sales (target platforms - HMS Bulwark and 1x Type23).

MoD dependency to support the sale and delivery of HMS Bulwark to Brazil delivering mid-2026 to allow handover and voyage to Rio. RFP received from MoD but submission now late due to resource availability. First contract expected at £3M on 1st Nov – significant reputational damage if we can’t submit, mobilise and deliver – with follow-on opportunities for further UK MoD Platform sales.

The role will also have accountability to cultivate growth opportunities either through international customers who purchase these platforms, or further UK MOD international sales.

These projects are expected to be highly complex from technical solution, execution and delivery team make up, drawing upon key teams across the Naval Ships business to successfully execute.

· Lead and coordinate a multi-disciplinary engineering team to bid and deliver 2 separate contracts into the UK MoD preparing HMS Bulwark for delivery to Brazil and HMS Richmond to Chile, enabling UK MoD Export sales.

· Financial and schedule accountability for the engineering activities undertaken to time, cost and quality.

· Ensures Combat Systems engineering procedures and policies are followed based on own knowledge of Engineering Management and the BMS.

· Full management authority, including performance reviews, pay decisions, recruitment, discipline, termination and other personnel actions.

Your main responsibilities as Senior Engineering Manager - CMS and SI Sanitisation will be to:

· Ensure essential procedures are followed based on own knowledge of Engineering Management based on NS Combat Systems engineering policies and procedures, in particular safety, security and design certification.

· Co-ordinate multi-disciplined product and engineering teams; leadership of engineering resources, delivery of packages of work/services, involving new products and/or complex upgrades, utilising new and existing technologies, requiring multiple interfaces with customers/suppliers or partners.

· Support the Business Development team to develop design solutions that are compliant and affordable, presenting to the business for agreement through the Technical Bid review process.

· Generate project engineering schedules and resource plans, establishing a mobilisation and steady state delivery strategy.

· Prepare for all LCM design reviews throughout the project, ensuring they are carried out via the approved tailoring statement for all Phases of the Delivery and Closure Stages (Phases 2C to 8).

· Prepare the formal customer design reviews, e.g. Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Reviews, Production Readiness and Test Readiness reviews.

· Co-ordinate multi-disciplined product and engineering teams; including leadership of engineering resources, delivery of packages of work/services, new products and/or complex upgrades, utilising new and existing technologies, requiring multiple interfaces with customers/suppliers or partners.

· Be a visible presence across the engineering teams, the project facilities, Combat Systems and customer sites, e.g. New Malden, Broad Oak, Portsmouth and Devonport Naval Base.

· Delivering the engineering tasks to time, cost and quality. Budget of projects is expected to be in the order of £10M, with several opportunities for growth with follow on opportunities – which this role will be accountable to grow, bid and deliver.

Your skills and qualifications:

· Knowledge of the Combat Management System product base and strategies.

· Experienced professional with extensive knowledge (min 10 years) of Engineering Management disciplines as they relate to Combat System design and development, e.g. Software, Systems, Integration, Hardware, Safety, Security and Transversals, and basic knowledge of other functions such as Commercial & Finance.

· Knowledge of the Combat Systems Equipment lifecycle from definition to in-service support.

· Understanding of the operational naval environment, ensuring our systems will be compliant with the requirements, relevant to operational theatre and fit for purpose.

· Able to develop innovative solutions to complex issues in a wider Business context.

· Recognised as an experienced Engineering Management practitioner within the local & wider Business.

· Awareness of the principles of naval battlespace architecting and how it applies to Combat Systems.

· Proven engineer, who can think creatively to overcome engineering, commercial and programmatic challenges

· Good commercial awareness and how it integrates within own project area.

· Degree qualified or equivalent experience, likely to be in a technology, engineering, science or IT related discipline

· Registered as CEng or other appropriate registration

· Member of a Professional Engineering Institute recognised by the Engineering Council, ideally working towards Fellow
