Position Overview
The American International School of Lusaka (AISL) is seeking a passionate and innovative educator to join our Secondary team as an IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Design Teacher. The ideal candidate will inspire and engage students in the practical and creative design cycle, fostering skills in critical thinking, technological literacy, and practical problem-solving. This role is central to developing students as successful inquirers, designers, and innovators. We are looking for a balanced individual who has experience in both digital design and product design, and who is capable of supporting students with open-ended projects in a variety of areas in the upper grades.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement engaging and effective learning units for IB MYP Design, ensuring full alignment with the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework and the Design cycle (Inquiring and Analysing, Developing Ideas, Creating the Solution, and Evaluating).
Deliver curriculum that incorporates a range of design areas, which may include Digital Design or Product Design.
Foster a student-centered learning environment that promotes creative risk-taking, collaborative project work, and the effective use of design technology tools and resources.
Assess student progress through a variety of methods aligned with the four Design criteria, providing timely and constructive feedback throughout the process that guides students through the iterative design process.
Collaborate effectively with colleagues across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary projects that connect Design with other subject areas.
Manage and maintain a safe, organized, and engaging Design workshop/studio environment and its related equipment.
Participate fully in professional learning opportunities to stay current with IB educational practices, advancements in design technology, and AISL's mission.
Engage proactively with parents and the wider community to support student learning and promote the values and strategic vision of AISL.
Contribute to the school's co-curricular activities program (as appropriate to the role).
Be a mentor/advisor to a group of students as part of our Ubuntu (Advisory +) program.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Design Technology, Industrial Arts, Engineering, or a related educational field.
IB MYP Design experience and training are highly desirable (or a demonstrated commitment to obtaining necessary training).
Minimum of two years of teaching experience, preferably in an international or IB school setting.
Strong practical skills and knowledge of equipment relevant to the Design curriculum (e.g., 3D printing, laser cutting, coding, and other key software, along with workshop safety and product design expertise).
Strong collaborative, communication, and organizational skills.
