Astera Health is looking for a full-time Laboratory Supervisor to join our team.
This position is scheduled for 80 hours per bi-weekly pay period, Monday - Friday, with occasional weekend and holiday rotation is the need arises. Responsibilities required, but not limited to:
Supervises daily activities of non-technical staff; phlebotomists, lab assistants, and students to ensure safe, high-quality patient care and satisfaction.
Assists the Lab Manager with staff scheduling, onboarding, training, and performance evaluations.
Conducts regular rounding and team check-ins, ensuring effective communication and team engagement.
Reviews and approves timecards, monitors supply inventory, and ensures efficient resource utilization.
Performs and maintains proficiency in phlebotomy, drug/alcohol testing, swab collections, ECGs, and other core lab functions, including weekends and holidays as needed.
Ensures proper patient identification, use of PPE, safety devices, and adherence to standard precautions.
Performs preventive maintenance, understands quality control principles, and ensures compliance with lab equipment standards.
Maintains current knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment, and best practices to serve as a clinical resource.
Ensures adherence to safety, infection control, and emergency procedures to protect patients, staff, and the facility.
Prepares for and participates in audits and inspections, maintaining readiness for regulatory bodies including CAP, Joint Commission, MDH, and others.
Develops, updates, and ensures compliance with phlebotomy and pre-analytical policies and procedures.
Completes and oversees annual competencies and required training (e.g., UDS collections, Breath Alcohol testing, CPR certification).
Performs clerical tasks such as entering orders, managing requisition files, scanning documentation, and directing phone inquiries.
Assists with outpatient draw schedules, nursing home collection scheduling, and cancer center staffing.
Investigates and follows up on patient, provider, or family concerns, promoting prompt resolution and service recovery.
Attends meetings assigned by Laboratory Manager.
Education and Experience Required:
Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science/medical technologist or associate's degree, with the requirement of obtaining a Bachelor's degree within 3 years in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
Successful completion of NCCLS approved program Licenses / Certifications: Laboratory certification with ASCP or equivalent
Clinical laboratory experience with 3 years of supervisor/lead or coordination experience preferred. Or; an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential responsibilities and duties of the job as listed above
