About the role

The Project Engineer – Structures, Civil & Facilities is responsible for planning and developing projects within V/Line’s Major Periodic Maintenance program. Reporting to the Project Manager, you’ll coordinate site investigations, develop practical designs, manage compliance, and prepare projects for successful delivery.

This role involves varied work environments, travel opportunities, and build strong stakeholder relationships while solving complex challenges. This role offers flexible time-in-lieu for weekend commitments.

Key accountabilities include:

· Drive planning and development of structures, civil, and facilities projects within the Major Periodic Maintenance (MPM) Program.

· Lead site investigations, surveys, and technical assessments to inform accurate designs and costings.

· Deliver designs that meet V/Line standards, safety requirements, and compliance obligations.

· Oversee stakeholder engagement, regulatory approvals, and risk management throughout the development phase.

· Prepare detailed project briefs and ensure readiness for handover to delivery teams.

· Track progress, contribute to reporting, and assist with financial forecasting and change management.

· Coordinate procurement of long-lead materials and collaborate with delivery teams during design and execution phases.

· Participate in Safety in Design workshops and lessons-learned reviews to drive continuous improvement.

About you

We’re looking for a proactive engineer who thrives in a collaborative environment and can adapt to varying work conditions. You’ll bring strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to delivering safe, practical solutions.

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

· Tertiary qualification in civil or structural engineering (essential).

· Proven experience in consultancy or construction; rail experience highly desirable.

· Strong understanding of project development and design processes.

· Proficiency in MS Office and ability to manage documentation effectively.

· Willingness to travel long distances and stay overnight when required.

· Category 3 medical clearance and valid driver’s licence.

· Excellent problem-solving ability and stakeholder engagement skills.

The total remuneration package for this role starts at approximately $117,500 inclusive of superannuation, with flexibility based on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.
