Job Description

Job Outline:

Polishing: To work as part of a team, utilising specific skills associated with Optical component manufacture producing a range of visible plastic optics to a high specification.

Diamond Turning: To work as part of a team setting and operating Diamond Turning Machines producing a range of infra-red and visible plastic optics to a high specification.

CNC 5 Axis: To work in a team operating a CNC 5 axis machine to produce a range of plastic optics for multiple product streams working to precision tolerances.

Key Responsibilities:

Main duties will include

The manufacture of Optical components – using hand polishing and machining methods

Operating Diamond Turning Machines and Metrology Equipment

Operating under minimum supervision within multi-skilled teams, supporting operations in achieving an environment of Continuous Improvement by applying lean manufacturing principles and processes.

Liaising on a technical basis with shop and product engineers and internal customers

Systematically investigating and identifying faults / problems and recommending and implementing appropriate corrective actions

Responsibility within the team for weekly DDP and COQ and recovery of hours

Personal Specification:

All candidates will demonstrate a good level of education (at least a grade C or above in Maths and English O Level/GCSE or equivalent), mechanical aptitude and an appreciation of mechanical principles, but above all the willingness to learn.

The ideal candidate will have an extensive knowledge of production and optical and CNC processes, gained over a number of years of practical experience, and will have a good understanding of general Engineering procedures.

Candidates should be flexible and keen to learn new processes and procedures with a positive attitude and ‘can do’ approach. Applicants who exhibit an engineering based background (preferably involving high-value / precision made products) with knowledge of production processes, gained from practical experience would be highly suited to these positions.

Flexibility of working hours may be required, along with availability to work overtime to meet business needs.

It would also be a great advantage if applicants had Optical Handling experience and demonstrate knowledge of optical / mechanical metrology. Competence in the use of PC’s, however given the specialised nature of our business full training will be given.
