General Summary

The Director, Product Development will be accountable to develop, price, and deliver novel insurance products and creative solutions to key clients, ensuring that RGA remains at the forefront of the industry whilst maintaining long term profitability and steadfast risk management practices.

This permanent full-time position is based in Hong Kong and reports into the Head of Product Development, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia Markets.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Lead the development and market introduction of innovative insurance solutions, setting the vision for product development to specific markets.

Drive business growth by identifying emerging trends and key growth opportunities, translating them into actionable product strategies that differentiate RGA in the marketplace.

Develop a deep understanding of client product needs by actively engaging with Business Development, clients, and the internal research function to inform product strategy and define a clear problem statement and objective.

Coordinate and gain targeted input from cross-functional teams—including Business Development, Pricing, Underwriting, Claims, Medical, and Regional Teams to identify, propose, and price new product concepts.

Analyse research papers and new sources of data to develop pricing assumptions for new product ideas.

Ensure pricing assumptions are based on sound risk assessment and thoroughly documented. Identify risks and propose mitigants through intelligent product design, practical underwriting guidelines, and robust claims controls.

Facilitate stakeholder alignment and secure buy-in for product concepts, pricing assumptions, and risk management guidelines.

Conduct research and testing to validate new product concepts, ensuring they meet market needs and strike the right balance between customer expectations, client objectives, and RGA’s strategic interests. Further develop the solution iteratively and advance only those concepts that demonstrate strong market potential and alignment with business goals.

Coach and develop team members to balance short-term product support with long-term innovation. Enhance their capabilities in product development, research, and pricing. Support the growth of normative skills and career development.

Travel as required for client meetings, presentations, seminars, and other business-related activities.

Qualifications - Required

Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, or a related discipline.

Fellowship with a globally recognized actuarial association (Society of Actuaries, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, etc.)

8+ years of relevant experience in life insurance, or reinsurance, with at least 3 years in a technical capacity, for example, pricing, experience analysis, or valuation.

Strong analytical, critical, and creative thinking skills, with advanced problem-solving abilities.

Proactive, alert to new opportunities, and able to translate business challenges into practical solutions.

Excellent project management skills, including the ability to define clear objectives, synthesize findings, and provide recommendations

Demonstrated ability to work independently, and to build and manage relationships and collaborate with internal stakeholders.

Proven track record of taking ownership and delivering on business objectives and innovative solutions.

Excellent oral and written communication with ability to deliver effective presentations.

Fluent in English

Qualifications - Preferred

Experience in product pricing or development with a reinsurer (preferred) or direct insurer.

Good understanding of the Hong Kong and/or China insurance market and medical system

Knowledge of markets and insurance products offerings outside of Hong Kong

Demonstrated expertise in leveraging AI or other technological solutions within product development would be considered beneficial.
