About the Position
The City of Wilmington is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Sanitation Maintenance Worker I. This position plays an important role in maintaining landfill operations, including fabrication, maintenance, and repair of landfill vehicles and equipment, as well as the general upkeep of landfill buildings and grounds.
This is a classified position, and candidates must successfully complete a Civil Service examination to be considered for hire.
Key Responsibilities
Remove dumpsters and compactors from location sites, perform fabrication and repairs, and deliver units to designated locations
Maintain computerized records of repairs, parts, and repair times
Inspect collection systems
Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on service vehicles, pickup trucks, dump trucks, recycle trucks, and landfill equipment
Operate landfill vehicles and equipment as needed
Maintain the appearance of the landfill, pick up litter, and assist with housekeeping of the landfill shop
Haul dirt to fill landfill as needed
Drive collection trucks along established routes as required
Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance
Follow all applicable OSHA safety standards and City safety requirements
Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and insurability under the City’s insurance plan
Must maintain a valid Class B CDL
Ability to perform medium physical work and work outdoors in all weather conditions
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair
Experience operating heavy and medium-duty equipment
Basic computer skills and recordkeeping
Ability to follow instructions, work independently or as part of a team, and maintain effective communication
Work Environment
Exposure to chemicals, fumes, loud noise, dust, and outdoor elements
May work around moving equipment, confined spaces, and inclement weather
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
Classified as medium work per U.S. Department of Labor standards
Compensation and Benefits
Starting Pay: $20.04 per hour
Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, paid leave, and participation in Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)
