About the Position
The City of Wilmington is seeking a skilled and experienced Wastewater Plant Operator III to join our team. This position plays a critical role in the operation and maintenance of the City’s wastewater treatment facility, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
This position is a classified, non-competitive role as approved by the Civil Service Commission on September 16, 2025, classifying Wastewater Operator I–III as non-competitive classified positions for both hiring and promotion.
Key Responsibilities
Operate and regulate pumps, valves, and other essential equipment to support wastewater treatment processes.
Maintain accurate records and prepare reports related to plant operations, including EPA-required documentation.
Conduct process control and lab analysis in support of NPDES permit compliance.
Serve as Operator of Record for the wastewater plant and/or collection system.
Assist with maintenance and repair of equipment, tanks, pumps, lift stations, motors, and vehicles.
Perform housekeeping and grounds maintenance, including mowing and snow removal.
Notify supervisors when chemicals are needed and assist with monitoring and sampling equipment.
Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
Respond to emergency situations outside of regular working hours as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Valid Ohio Driver’s License and insurability under the City’s insurance plan.
Ohio EPA Class III Wastewater Operator License required at time of appointment.
Minimum of five (5) years of wastewater treatment experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Advanced knowledge of wastewater treatment operations, laboratory procedures, and regulatory compliance.
Experience as Operator of Record and ability to lead operational functions.
Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills in both routine and emergency situations.
Strong communication and documentation skills.
Work Environment
Exposure to chemicals, confined spaces, loud noise, and inclement weather.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and work in physically demanding environments.
Classified as medium work per U.S. Department of Labor standards.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting Hourly Rate: $25.58
Shift Differential: Up to 10% may apply
