Head of Technology – Power Systems & Automation

New Value Solutions, a national IT consulting company, is seeking a Head of Technology for a client in the electrical and industrial automation sector based in Winnipeg, MB. The role reports to the COO and will spearhead innovation and guide product development initiatives across hardware, firmware, and software domains.

Local presence in Winnipeg is required.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with Sales, Applications Engineering, and Product Management to define product direction based on market trends and industry innovation.

Drive conceptualization, feasibility analysis, and technical definition of multi disciplinary product development projects.

Oversee the evolution and upkeep of existing product lines to meet industry standards and technological advancements.

Define technical project scope, goals, and deliverables that align with broader business strategies.

Act as a key stakeholder throughout product development, ensuring timely and strategic delivery of product features.

Estimate and secure necessary resources, including budget, personnel, and technical skillsets, for successful execution of development initiatives.

Lead, mentor, and inspire technical teams, fostering a culture of innovation and accountability.

Build and maintain collaborative relationships essential to the success of technology driven projects.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

7–15 years of total experience in technology/product development, particularly within the power systems or electrical manufacturing sector.

Minimum of 3 years in a technical leadership or managerial capacity.

In depth knowledge of power systems, including substation automation and protective relays.

Experience in embedded systems development (firmware and hardware).

Proficiency with SCADA systems and protocols such as IEC 61850.

Strong leadership, team building, and cross functional collaboration skills.

Ability to define long term product and technology roadmaps aligned with market needs and regulatory changes (e.g., NERC, IEEE, IEC).

Identify opportunities for innovation—such as integrating AI/ML for fault detection or predictive maintenance.

Demonstrated ability to translate technical insights into business and product outcomes.
