Description

This position has a variety of unique opportunities. The person who fills this position will be play a part in maintaining campus exterior spaces and maintaining Grounds Crew equipment. They will also play a part in the student athlete experience at Luther College, maintaining game and practice fields.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mowing and trimming

Snow removal

Equipment maintenance, repair, and record keeping

Diagnose and correct equipment issues.

Safely apply fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides

Athletic field preparation and maintenance

Maintain landscaped areas

Maintain and repair streets and sidewalks

Assist with Facilities Services work requests

Assist with unloading truck supplies

Be available for scheduled and emergency after hours work

Use of all types of power equipment

Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

May supervise students to ensure they have necessary knowledge, supplies, and tools to complete work assignment safely.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent required. Degree in turf care or related field preferred.

Must be able to follow instructions, ability to mix appropriate chemical dilution ratio and understand directions for use.

Must possess and maintain a certified applicators license for turf and ornamentals from the Iowa Department of Agriculture. If uncertified in Iowa, must become certified within 180 days of hire.

Valid driver's license.

Must pass a Motor Vehicle Records check according to Luther College requirements.

Experience:

Three years' experience in a golf course, athletic field maintenance, landscaping maintenance or grounds keeping is also preferred.

Minimum of two years' experience in equipment maintenance and repair. Fabrication experience preferred.

Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Mobility: walk or stand for extended periods of time. Ability to operate equipment for extended periods of time.

Lifting: ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.

Dexterity: must have a full range of motion in the upper extremities.

Climbing: Use of high ladders and scaffolding up to 30 feet.

Be available for scheduled shifts and be flexible around event schedules.

Overtime may be required.

Must be able to arrive early morning for snow removal duties.

Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods in all types of weather conditions, ranging to extremes of hot and cold..

Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, noise, dust and fumes.

Required to work in restricted places which may require stooping, bending and kneeling. Buildings and grounds are smoke free.
