HR Project Partners is currently accepting resumes for an Open-Pit Mine Geologist on behalf of our client, Maritime Resources. The Open-Pit Mine Geologist position will be responsible for implementing and managing grade control programs, conducting detailed geological mapping and sampling, and supporting short-term mine planning through accurate geological interpretations. This role requires strong analytical skills, a commitment to safety and environmental stewardship, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
This position will support the Hammerdown Mine Site. Maritime is currently advancing the open pit Hammerdown gold deposit into production before the end of Q4 2025. The mine will be a 750 tonne per day operation with an estimated minimum mine life of 5 to 6 years.
This is a site-based position and will be working on a rotational schedule based in King’s Point, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Deadline to apply: Friday, October 17, 2025
Essential Job Functions:
Design and implement grade control programs focused on narrow, high-grade gold zones.
Use blast hole sampling and field mapping to define ore boundaries and minimize dilution.
Ensure accurate ore classification (e.g., high-grade, low-grade, marginal, waste) for optimal mill feed.
Monitor gold recovery trends and adjust geological interpretations accordingly.
Conduct detailed pit mapping to identify lithological units, alteration zones (e.g., silicification, sericitization), and structural controls on gold mineralization.
Log drill cores with emphasis on gold-bearing structures (e.g., quartz veins, shear zones).
Oversee blast hole and trench sampling with strict protocols to avoid contamination and sample loss.
Implement QA/QC programs including blanks, duplicates, and certified reference materials.
Monitor assay turnaround times and investigate any anomalous or inconsistent results.
Maintain accurate geological databases with gold assay data, lithology, and structural information.
Assist in updating 3D geological and grade models using software like Leapfrog, Surpac, or Datamine.
Interpret gold distribution patterns and contribute to resource estimation updates.
Provide geological input to short-term mine planning and daily production meetings.
Collaborate with engineers to optimize pit designs based on gold mineralization trends.
Flag areas of potential high-grade zones or geological risk (e.g., fault offsets, barren dykes).
Conduct fieldwork safely in accordance with mine safety protocols.
Identify and report geotechnical hazards (e.g., unstable walls, water ingress).
Support environmental teams in identifying potentially acid-generating rocks.
Prepare daily ore control reports and reconciliation summaries.
Communicate geological findings clearly to mine operations, mill, and planning teams.
Participate in reconciliation meetings to compare predicted vs. actual gold production.
Evaluate and improve sampling, logging, and modeling practices for better gold recovery.
Train junior geologists and technicians in gold-specific geological techniques.
Stay current with advances in gold exploration and mining geology.
Education and Experience Requirements:
3–5 years of experience in mine geology, ideally in open pit mining environments.
Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Mining Technology.
Experience with grade control, blast monitoring, and ore zone modeling is highly valued.
Proficiency in geological software (Datamine, Deswik, Leapfrog).
Knowledge, Skills, & Attributes:
Proficient in geological mapping and interpretation.
Skilled in core logging and sampling techniques.
Experienced in 3D geological modeling using industry-standard software.
Strong understanding of QA/QC protocols for geological data integrity.
Competent in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
