What you’ll contribute to

An exciting opportunity has become available for a suitable Development Engineer to join our Product Planning & Development Division in a 12 month max term role.

The Product Planning & Development Division is responsible for the end-to-end process of vehicle and Genuine Accessory development—including planning, styling, engineering, evaluation, and regulatory compliance. Our mission is to design and deliver innovative, globally relevant products that enhance the customer experience. We play a pivotal role in Toyota’s transformation into a mobility company, contributing to inclusive and forward-thinking solutions that ensure no one is left behind.

The Development Engineer plays a key role in managing the end-to-end development of Genuine Accessories and Conversions. This includes defining project scope, collaborating with internal teams and external suppliers, and overseeing product evaluation and approval to ensure alignment with Toyota’s standards. The role also involves managing timelines and costs to consistently exceed customer expectations.

This role based in Altona North with flexible work arrangements on offer.

How you’ll make an impact

Project Management:

Develop and maintain project schedules aligned with key milestones

Track progress and implement corrective actions to recover delays

Actively engage with stakeholders to ensure timely achievement of design approval targets

Part Development

Lead feasibility assessments and benchmarking activities to support accessory development

Define technical specifications to guide styling and design creation

Develop project scope and support supplier selection in collaboration with stakeholders

Contribute to DFMEA (Design by Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and boundary diagram development to ensure robust design

Facilitate regular design reviews to confirm alignment with product requirements

Prepare and manage approval documentation with suppliers for tooling initiation and final sign-off

Part Evaluation

Participate in part fitment trials to assess installation and compatibility

Coordinate evaluation activities with the Evaluation team and suppliers

Prepare and review evaluation reports in collaboration with relevant stakeholders

Identify and implement appropriate countermeasures based on evaluation outcomes

Cost Management

Contribute to cost estimation during the project scoping phase

Review supplier quotations in collaboration with the Procurement team

Monitor and manage project costs to ensure alignment with agreed targets

Supplier Management

Participate in regular project status meetings, offering support and guidance as needed

Communicate vehicle environment CAD data and technical requirements clearly and proactively to facilitate effective development and evaluation with suppliers

Field Problem Resolution

Quickly identify root causes of issues arising in the field

Implement effective countermeasures to resolve problems

Complete reflection activities and ensure measures are in place to prevent recurrence

Engineering Qualification: Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; eligibility for National Engineers Registration (NER) preferred

Experience: Minimum 4 years in engineering development, with project management exposure

Technical Skills: Proficient in CAD (CATIA ideal), engineering drawings (GD&T - Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and CAE – Computer Aided Engineering principles

Automotive Knowledge: Solid understanding of automotive systems, performance components, and workshop assembly/disassembly

Problem Solving & Leadership: Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated ability in stakeholder management, negotiation, and team leadership

Collaboration & Communication: Effective communicator with experience working across internal teams and external suppliers
