MATH SPECIALIST
Sussex County Public Schools is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Math Specialist to support high-quality mathematics instruction across grade levels. This role involves working closely with teachers, instructional staff, and school leaders to improve student outcomes through coaching, professional development, data analysis, and direct intervention. The Math Coach will serve as a key resource in advancing school-wide goals and fostering a culture of excellence in mathematics education.
Requirements:
Valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Mathematics or a related field
Minimum of 5 effective years of experience as a certified math teacher
Proven success working with students who struggle in mathematics
Strong knowledge of how children learn math and how to differentiate instruction
Experience with high-quality math curriculum and instructional materials
Demonstrated ability to collaborate, coach, and lead instructional improvement
Reports To: Director of Instruction
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Instructional Coaching & Support
Serve as a resource to teachers, instructional staff, and school leaders on math education
Observe math instruction, provide constructive feedback, and identify next steps to improve teaching practices (for support, not evaluation)
Model exemplar math lessons and high-quality instructional strategies
Support lesson preparation using high-quality math curriculum and materials
Collaborate with other specialists and instructional leaders to align efforts with school-wide goals
Student Intervention & Support
Provide individual and group math interventions to students daily
Create and monitor student support plans tailored to math achievement
Assist classroom teachers with implementing and monitoring math interventions
Model and support high-quality interactions with students to foster engagement and understanding
Curriculum & Assessment
Support curriculum development and implementation of high-quality math programs
Create classroom and grade-level assessments to monitor progress and guide instruction
Participate in school improvement planning, especially as it relates to mathematics
Data-Driven Instruction
Analyze student data, identify trends, and support teachers in adjusting instruction accordingly
Communicate regularly with the leadership team on school-wide math progress
Family & Community Engagement
Support teachers with effective parent communication and strategies for family involvement
Promote a belief in all students' ability to become successful mathematicians
Professional Development
Lead and participate in professional development sessions and PLCs focused on math instruction
Attend all required meetings and trainings to stay current with best practices and district initiatives

Terms of Employment: 8 hours per day, 11 months (220 days)
Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of Sussex County School Board's policy manual.
