We enable positive change and growth for people through a range of prevention and early intervention programs including Community Education, Family Services, Legal Services (through commUnity+ Legal), Neighbourhood House and community engagement and development activities.
commUnity+ Legal, funded by State and Commonwealth governments and supported through philanthropic project funding, provides free legal services for people who live, work or study in the Brimbank, Melton and Bacchus Marsh communities.
About the position
Reporting to the Generalist or Family Law Lead, the Community Lawyer will deliver high-quality legal advice, casework, advocacy, and community legal education. This role will also assist with the delivery of legal services and community service activities at our outreach-based clinics, as well as providing duty lawyer services for family violence Intervention Order matters (including at the new Wyndham Law Courts). In addition to direct service delivery, the Community Lawyer will play an important part in identifying systemic legal issues and assisting with law reform activities as directed by the Manager/Principal Lawyer and Generalist Lead Lawyer or Family Law Lead.
The successful candidates will be committed to social justice and impactful service, delivering excellence as a legal practitioner, and addressing the legal needs communities experiencing high levels of vulnerability and marginalisation.
Key Selection Criteria
Bachelor of Laws/Juris Doctor and a current Victorian Legal Practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain the same) preferably with a minimum of 2 years post admission experience.
Demonstrated case management experience in a range of areas of law (including infringements; motor vehicle accidents/insurance; criminal law; family violence; tenancy; civil and consumer law) AND/OR demonstrated case management experience in family law.
Highly developed interpersonal skills, including experience working with culturally diverse communities and clients experiencing social disadvantage.
Ability to work under pressure as part of a busy team and manage a large and diverse caseload with competing deadlines.
Ability to work independently at offsite locations and manage tasks and workloads relating to outreach service provision.
Duty lawyering experience.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing for a range of purposes and a variety of audiences.
Strong Computer literacy – experience with Microsoft software e.g. Word, Outlook, Publisher, Power-Point, Zoom, Microsoft Team, Access & Excel to generate own letters and use email.
High level of commitment and professionalism.
Experience working with communities in the Brimbank, Melton and wider Western regions and proficiency in a community language would be considered as added advantages.
A current Driver’s License and the ability to travel between offices and outreach locations is essential for this role. Additionally, a Working with Children Check and National Police Check with ongoing validity are mandatory for this role.
