We are looking for a Senior Civil Engineer who is ready to lead the technical delivery on a diverse range of challenging projects.

The Role

Based in Melbourne, this role offers you the opportunity to provide technical leadership on a diverse range of roads and highways projects. You’ll apply your strong industry knowledge to drive project delivery, while also stepping into the role of Design Manager when required. In addition to leading projects, you’ll play a key role in nurturing client relationships, mentoring junior engineers and collaborating closely with multi-disciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

Lead technical delivery of transport infrastructure projects across Victoria, applying both standard and advanced engineering techniques.

Develop design solutions, prepare drawings, calculations, and specifications.

Undertake and oversee the production of technical reports and construction documents.

Prepare project reports as required and liaise with clients and internal teams to ensure project success.

Oversee project management tasks including reporting on job progress and work recording ensuring quality is maintained and technical risks are managed.

Supervise and mentor junior engineers, fostering their technical growth.

Manage mid-size projects independently.

Contribute to cross-functional initiatives within HDR’s Highways Business Class.

Drive safety and quality leadership aligned with HDR’s “Drive to Zero” initiative.

Represent HDR at industry technical seminars and promote a positive, inclusive culture aligned with HDR values.

About You

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related discipline.

Typically, a minimum of 7 years’ professional experience in civil engineering, focusing on highways and roads.

Ideally a Chartered member of Engineers Australia and Registered Professional Engineer Victoria (RPEV).

Detailed knowledge of the Victorian transportation market and VicRoads standards is required.

Experience in project management, including commercial, administrative, and technical aspects.

Proven ability to successfully lead small project teams.

Proficient in design software such as OpenRoads, 12D and Microstation.

Broad experience in roads, pavements, drainage, and utilities.

Some appreciation of transport structures.

Site experience and appreciation of construction methods for roads.

Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and drive innovation in design and delivery.

Self-motivated with a growth mindset and passion for continuous learning.
