Pavement Assessment Engineer

Location: Fort Polk, LA

Pay: $80-95K per year

NOTE: Must reside within 50 miles of Fort Polk, LA – Directorate of Public Works

Overview

Areli, Inc. invites applications for a pavement assessment engineer position at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The successful candidate will evaluate the condition and performance of paved infrastructure—including roads and parking lots—across the installation. Their work supports both military and civilian operations, ensuring safety, reliability, and effective resource management.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive on-site inspections of roads and parking lots, documenting pavement conditions and identifying distresses and structural concerns.

Survey 25% of the road and parking lot pavement inventory annually to maintain an accurate and up-to-date Pavement Condition Index (PCI) for each section.

Apply inspection techniques and distress identification methods as outlined in ASTM D6433 Standard Practice for Roads and Parking Lots Pavement Condition Index Surveys to ensure standardized and precise assessments.

Use advanced tools—including ground-penetrating radar, laser profilers, and core sampling—to analyze pavement health and deterioration patterns.

Record, track, and analyze pavement condition data using SMS PAVER (Sustainment Management System), maintaining data integrity and supporting maintenance and rehabilitation decisions.

Prepare thorough technical reports, including findings, photographs, recommendations, and maintenance priorities, tailored for diverse audiences at Fort Polk.

Collaborate with engineers, asset managers, and government agencies to develop prioritized repair schedules and predict future pavement needs.

Monitor the quality of maintenance and rehabilitation projects, ensuring compliance with specifications and safety standards.

Evaluate pavement safety risks and communicate findings to stakeholders, supporting both operational and public needs.

Maintain meticulous records, inspection dates, and historical performance data in management systems.

Liaise regularly with Fort Polk officials, contractors, and the broader community to share pavement status and respond to inquiries.

Stay current with best practices in pavement assessment, materials, and emerging technologies through ongoing professional development.

Essential Skills and Competencies

Proficiency with ASTM D6433 Standard Practice for Roads and Parking Lots Pavement Condition Index Surveys, including distress identification and application of condition rating methodologies.

Experience with SMS PAVER is highly desirable; familiarity with pavement management software is required.

Strong understanding of pavement design, materials, construction techniques, and failure modes, with knowledge tailored to the climate and conditions of Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Analytical skills for interpreting complex datasets and drawing evidence-based conclusions.

Clear communication skills for reporting findings and engaging stakeholders.

Attention to detail during inspections and analysis, ensuring accuracy at every step.

Physical stamina for fieldwork in varied weather conditions.

Project management skills to oversee multiple assessment projects and deadlines.

Teamwork and collaboration with other professionals on-site.

Work Environment

The engineer will divide their time between outdoor inspections at Fort Polk and office-based analysis and reporting at the Fort Polk Directorate of Public Works. The position requires flexibility, travel across the installation, and the ability to work in Louisiana’s climate.

Qualifications and Experience

Degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering, construction management, or a related field.

Certifications from relevant professional bodies, such as ASCE or ISSA, are advantageous.

3+ years of experience in pavement assessment, road inspection, or related fields, with a preference for candidates with prior work using SMS PAVER and ASTM D6433 methodologies.

Valid driver’s license required for site visits across Fort Polk.

US Citizen

Ability to pass and retain a National Agency Check Investigation
