Job Description

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Provides specialized instruction and services for individuals with disorders of language, speech, and / or hearing. Students receiving designated instructional services on the basis of Speech and Language impairment demonstrate difficulty understanding or using spoken language to such an extent that it adversely affects his / her educational performance and cannot be corrected without special education and related services. The Speech and Language Specialist provides specialized instruction or services in language, speech, and hearing to students in small groups or individually as specified by their individualized education programs. The Speech and Language Specialist must demonstrate the skills, knowledge and performance competencies adopted by the Commission on Teacher Preparation and Licensing, and the State Board.

DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO:

Assistant Superintendent

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides specialized instruction to students with valid individualized education programs in the following areas:

a. Articulation (production of speech significantly interferes with communication and attracts adverse attention)

b. Abnormal voice (characterized by persistent, defective voice quality, pitch or loudness)

c. Fluency (abnormal flow of verbal expression adversely affects communication; i.e., stuttering)

d. Oral receptive and expressive language-delayed or inappropriate responses / syntactical errors / morphological errors / delayed vocabulary / concept association / directional prepositions / auditory attention, discrimination / memory and sequencing

2. Conducts formal and informal assessments in the four language areas, as well as provides a written report of the assessment. In conducting assessments, the Speech and Language Specialist must follow the legal guidelines established by State and Federal mandates.

3. Provides hearing and language screening when necessary.

4. Provides consultation to parents, teachers, or other school personnel in the management of a student's language, speech or hearing disorder.

5. Coordinates the schedules of students enrolled in the Speech and Language Program.

6. Participates regularly in Student Study Team meetings.

7. Participates in the development, review and revision of individualized education programs, as needed.

OTHER DUTIES

1. Monitors and evaluates, on a regular basis, progress of students enrolled in the Speech and Language Program.

2. Maintains daily attendance registers of students enrolled in the Speech and Language Program.

3. Participates in staff meetings and is reasonably involved in school-sponsored activities.

4. Maintains professional competence through participation in one or more of the following areas: advanced educational / professional activities or organizations / inservice education or self-selected professional growth activities.

5. Orders appropriate supplies and instructional materials for use with students assigned to the Speech and Language Program, and maintains required inventory records.
