The Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI in Sankt Augustin, near Bonn, has around 180 employees who research and develop innovative methods in the field of computational science and implement them in industrial practice as partners to industry.
The Biomedical AI & Data Science team is dedicated to the development and application of cutting-edge data science approaches (specifically machine learning) in early drug discovery, precision medicine and clinical trials. The team is internationally well connected and is working closely together with leading European and US institutions from academia and industry in multiple research projects.
What you will do
Development & application of innovative algorithms in the field of machine learning, specifically with focus on decision support in medicine and healthcare in the wider sense
Active support of ongoing research projects in generative AI for real-world data applications in medicine
Presentation of results via scientific publications, workshops and conferences as well as to external collaboration partners
Active support of team leader in terms of acquisition of new projects and technology transfer into pharma and biotech industry
Active collaboration with the support of other team members, for example regarding publications and code development
What you bring to the table
PhD (preferred) and M.Sc. with excellent grades in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biomathematics or a similar subject
High level of intrinsic motivation and enthusiasm for translational research connecting academia and industry
Clear understanding of statistical and mathematical concepts underlying Data Science
Strong passion for Data Science with documented experiences plus an equally strong and documented interest in biomedicine
Experience with generative AI, specifically transformer architectures, is a strong plus
Documented experience with relevant biomedical data types, e.g. longitudinal clinical data studies, clinical real-world data such as electronic health records, or data from digital health applications
Strong programming skills in python and demonstratable experience with Tensor Flow and / or PyTorch
Ability to work independently
Very good English speaking and writing skills
Good German language skills are a plus
Very good communication skills

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
