EDUCATIONAL SERVICE CENTER OF CENTRAL OHIO

Title: Career and Life Skills Paraprofessional (Full-Time)

Reports to: Assigned Coordinator of Special Education and Teacher

Job Objectives: Work with 9th through 12th+ grade students with identified disabilities to develop skills on job sites to help them to become more independent contributing employees in the community.

Employment Status: Regular

Minimum Qualifications: ·

High school diploma.

Varied work background and volunteer experiences is preferred

Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).

Documentation of a clear criminal record.

Complies with drug-free workplace rules and board policies.

Valid Ohio Department of Education Permit appropriate for the assignment.

Self-directed and able to learn required skills for the position.

Ability to physically manage students with disabilities.

Congenial disposition and strong diplomacy skills.

Satisfactory pre-employment and ongoing random drug tests results.

Ability to cope with stressful traffic, weather conditions, and passenger distractions.

Note: Appointment requires successful completion and periodic renewal of state mandated and service center training requirements (e.g., communicable disease, child abuse, CPR, first aid, and/or behavioral management training).

Note: This assignment may require a valid driver’s license, access/availability of a reliable vehicle, and/or completion of van driver training. Employees must meet all prerequisite and ongoing qualifications to be covered by the service center’s insurance carrier.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.

Support students who have completed high school coursework but are deferring their diploma to focus on postsecondary readiness skills, including employment, independent living, and community participation

Meet with the Transition to Work Coordinator and classroom teacher to learn and demonstrate understanding of each student’s job placement, individual learning needs, and training goals.

Identify gaps in knowledge needed for success in adult settings and facilitate learning opportunities that promote student growth.

Assist students in learning assigned job tasks by breaking down steps, providing supports or modifications, and implementing strategies in collaboration with instructional staff.

Learn and apply effective coaching techniques, including fading supports to foster student independence.

Supervise students at all times in workplace and community settings, following approved support and fade-out plans.

Serve as a liaison between job supervisors, students, and the school team; help identify and establish natural supports in the workplace.

Provide direct support and coaching in community and daily living skills such as transportation, budgeting, meal preparation, household management, and self-care.

Reinforce skills in communication, self-advocacy, executive functioning, organization, problem-solving, and decision-making to prepare students for adult life.

Be aware of each student’s unique medical needs and follow established plans for handling medical emergencies in both school and community settings.

Anticipate and support student needs during outings (e.g., wheelchair access, meals, financial expenses, medical supports, toileting) to ensure experiences are both accessible and meaningful.

Monitor and communicate student progress to the Transition to Work Coordinator, teachers, families, and, when appropriate, employers.

Collect and maintain accurate records of student performance, modifications attempted, and training results through data collection, anecdotal notes, and performance evaluations.

Complete and submit documentation of service delivery, mileage, and time sheets in a timely manner for compliance and billing purposes.

Travel daily to various job and community locations; if transporting students, maintain all qualifications for an Ohio Van Driver’s License per ODE requirements.

Communicate key details with families regarding daily progress, student needs, and upcoming events.

Participate in team meetings, IEP reviews, and transition planning discussions as requested.

Collaborate with teachers, coordinators, related service providers, families, and community partners to support student success.

Maintain student confidentiality, sharing information only with authorized individuals.

Promote student confidence, independence, and readiness for employment and adult living.
