The Role
Are you experienced in maintaining and repairing electrical systems? Do you enjoy working in a hands-on role that supports a vibrant campus community?
Ferrum College is looking for a skilled and safety-conscious Electrician to join our Physical Plant team. This full-time position plays a vital role in maintaining safe and efficient electrical systems across our academic, residential, and administrative buildings. You will work with a dedicated team to ensure all systems are reliable, compliant, and ready to support daily campus operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, wiring, and fixtures
Follow NEC and local codes on all projects
Perform preventive maintenance on lighting, power, and backup systems
Test and maintain fire alarm systems to meet safety standards
Diagnose and resolve electrical issues promptly
Work collaboratively with HVAC, plumbing, and general maintenance teams
Maintain detailed service records and documentation
Follow all OSHA and lockout/tagout safety protocols
Provide temporary power setups for campus events
Respond to emergency calls as part of an on-call rotation

Ferrum College, an NCAA Division III institution, is a proud member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). We will be transiting from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to Division II Conference Carolinas in the fall of 2025.

The Person
We’re looking for someone who:
Holds a high school diploma or equivalent
Has 3–5 years of experience in commercial or institutional electrical work
Possesses a valid state electrician’s certification
Knows NEC, OSHA standards, and energy-efficient practices
Can read blueprints and technical diagrams
Is skilled with electrical testing equipment and tools
Has strong troubleshooting abilities
Can lift up to 50 lbs. and work from ladders or in confined spaces
Preferred: Experience with campus or multi-building systems and familiarity with building automation and energy management controls.
Full-time
