Job Description
UX Designer
Division: DATUM, Impac Exploration Services
Location: Remote, Oklahoma City (OK), Houston (TX)
Type: Full-Time
Design at the Speed of Drilling
We're not looking for someone to make our software pretty. We're looking for someone to make it disappear—to design interfaces so intuitive that roughnecks, engineers, and executives forget they're using software at all.
DATUM is where cutting-edge ML meets boots-on-the-ground operations. Our design philosophy is simple: UX isn't a feature. It's the product.
New to the industry? That's exactly why we want you. You haven't learned to accept that industrial software "has to be" clunky. You still believe enterprise tools can spark joy. You're right.
The Real Deal About This Role
You'll get mud on your boots. Literally. One week you're sketching interfaces in Figma, the next you're on a rig at dawn watching operators interact with your designs through safety glasses and work gloves. You'll sit in control rooms understanding why that button needs to be exactly there. You'll present to executives who make million-dollar decisions based on your visualizations.
This isn't theoretical design. When we say "ship fast," we mean your designs will be in production within weeks, used by real people making real decisions. You'll watch, learn, iterate, and ship again.
What You'll Design (and Why It Matters)
Interfaces that make AI predictions feel trustworthy and transparent
Real-time visualizations of physics happening miles underground
Mobile experiences that work in -40 ree;F and 120 ree;F, with gloves on
Desktop tools for engineers who live in the data
Design systems that scale from smartwatches to video walls
The visual language for how humans and AI collaborate on critical decisions
Your Design Toolkit
Core tools (negotiable based on your preferences):
Figma for design and collaboration
Prototyping tools that get us to user testing fast
React/TypeScript when you want to build it yourself
D3.js/Three.js for data viz that makes people say "whoa"
Analytics to see how designs perform in the wild
A hard hat (we'll provide this one)
You're Our Person If
You believe the best interface is no interface
You design with empathy for users you haven't met yet
Complex problems energize rather than overwhelm you
You can advocate for users while shipping at startup speed
You understand that "simple" and "easy" aren't the same thing
Constraints make you more creative, not less
Especially Interested If
You've made something complicated feel effortless
You've designed for accessibility and extreme use cases
Data visualization is your love language
You have strong opinions loosely held about design
You're curious about how things actually work, not just how they look
How We Invest in Design
UX is our superpower, and we put our money where our mouth is:
Direct access to users—from field to boardroom
Budget for research, testing, and iteration
Partnership with top-tier marketing agency for brand alignment
Your own UX Researcher partner (hiring soon) to validate every decision
Freedom to say "this needs more iteration" and be heard
Resources to attend conferences, workshops, and learning opportunities
Growth Trajectory
Start by designing interfaces. Within months, you'll be shaping product strategy. You'll work directly with our ML team to imagine new ways of visualizing predictions. You'll partner with marketing to ensure brand coherence. You'll become dangerously knowledgeable about an industry that powers the world.
When Google or Apple eventually tries to poach you because you've redefined what industrial UX can be, we'll write your recommendation letter with pride.
The Honest Truth
This is demanding work. Your designs will be used in situations where mistakes cost millions. You'll need to balance beauty with bulletproof reliability. You'll learn more about drilling operations than you ever thought possible.
But you'll also ship designs that matter. That keep people safe. That make experts trust AI for the first time. That prove industrial software can be as delightful as consumer apps.
Ready to Design the Future?
Send us your portfolio—especially anything that shows you can make complex things clear. We care more about your thinking process than your years of experience. Show us how you approach problems, and we'll show you problems worth solving.
We do not currently sponsor visas or participate in CPT programs.
