About Sonoco

Founded in 1899, Sonoco is a global provider of innovative packaging solutions for consumer goods, industrial products, healthcare, and protective applications. Today, Sonoco employs approximately 28,000 people across more than 300 sites worldwide, partnering with many leading international brands.

Our integrated packaging solutions help brands strengthen their identity, create unique customer experiences, and improve the quality of products as well as people’s lives. All in line with our mission: Better Packaging. Better Life.

The Mechelen site is part of our European division and specializes in the production of snack packaging. Our office is located in the heart of the production environment, where production, engineering, logistics, quality, and supporting services all come together to deliver reliable and innovative solutions to our customers every single day.

Your role

As an EHS Coordinator, you are the key contact for everything related to safety, health, and environment within Sonoco Belgium. Your main focus will be our Mechelen site, while also providing support to the sites in Puurs and Brussels.

With your expertise, you will help us strengthen our safety culture and ensure compliance with laws and regulations. You translate policies into practical solutions on the shop floor, guide colleagues and supervisors, and launch initiatives that support sustainability and continuous improvement.

In short: you make sure that everyone at Sonoco can work every day in a safe, healthy, and future-oriented environment.

What will you do?

In this role, you combine policy-related responsibilities with hands-on follow-up on the shop floor. Your key tasks include:

Monitoring and implementing EHS legislation and internal guidelines

Developing and coordinating safety and environmental procedures

Organizing training sessions, toolbox talks, and awareness campaigns

Supporting supervisors in guiding and coaching their teams on safety and well-being

Following up and analyzing incidents, accidents, near-misses and ensuring corrective actions

Coordinating inspections, audits, and risk analyses

Initiating projects on sustainability and environmental impact (energy, waste, emissions)

Reporting on EHS performance and actions to management and employees

What do you bring?

You combine technical knowledge with a people-oriented approach. You are detail-minded but above all know how to engage colleagues in the story of safety, health, and sustainability.

A bachelor’s or master’s degree, preferably in a technical or prevention-related field

A recognized Prevention Advisor certificate (level 2 or 3), or the willingness to obtain one

Experience in safety, health, or environment within a production or industrial setting is a plus

Strong communication skills: you know how to convince, coach, and motivate colleagues

An analytical yet practical mindset: you spot improvement opportunities and turn them into concrete actions

Fluency in Dutch and English

What do we offer?

At Sonoco, you will join an international production environment where safety, sustainability, and teamwork are at the center. We not only offer you an exciting position, but also the opportunity to grow your expertise and make a real impact.

A permanent contract (39-hour workweek) with flexible working hours

An attractive salary package, complemented by extra-legal benefits:

Company car with energy card

Smartphone

Meal vouchers and eco vouchers

Group and hospitalization insurance

Non-recurrent result-based bonus (CAO90)

12 additional ADV days, 2 extra-legal vacation days, plus seniority days

Option for bike leasing

A laptop and remote working possibilities after the onboarding period

Internal training and career development opportunities within Sonoco

A healthy work-life balance thanks to generous leave and flexible hours

A professional work environment with room for personal growth and development
