Sawmill Supervisor

The Sawmill Supervisor will meet or exceed sawmill productions levels, quality expectations and safety goals.

Maintain safe and efficient conversion of logs to lumber.

Supervise and direct all production employees on your shift.

Interpret and pass on the company goals and objectives to crews.

Ensure that safety goals and objectives are adhered to during your shift.

Primary Duties

Safety:

Read, understand and follow safe work procedures.

Ensure work carried out by production crew is done in a safe and efficient manner that is in compliance with legislative and Company policies.

Conduct monthly crew safety talks, follow up and feedback.

Address safety violations, retrain, remotivate and/or discipline.

Perform regular safety audits and lock-out verifications.

Enforce the proper use of personal protective equipment.

Regularly review safe work procedures.

Train new and current employees on safe and efficient work practices.

Monitor housekeeping.

Communicate to maintenance and electrical superintendents for any work that must be done for safety and production issues.

Production:

Ensure that proper sawmilling techniques are used to ensure maximum production, lumber recovery and grade yield.

Program machine centers, evaluate and modify.

Monitor machine center performance.

Monitor reman levels.

Monitor the breakdown, handling, transporting and inventory of rough stock.

Provide information and ideas to maintenance department regarding repair and or modification to machinery for maximum efficiency.

Ensure clean-up/housekeeping is being completed during down-time.

Documentation/Administration/Management:

Provide and record feedback to senior management in the way of on daily reports on outlining the achievement of goals and objectives and problems to be addressed.

Attend production and planning meetings as required.

Maintain good communication with colleagues and senior management.

Set up manning and holiday schedules for the most efficient deployment of the production crew including minimizing O.T.

Ensure employee performance levels meet company expectations and standards document training, coaching, and discipline as required.

Ensure that timekeeping records for payroll are accurate for payroll processing.

Perform a yard tour and mill tours and act on the deficiencies.

Qualifications:

Sawmill production experience.

Supervisory experience.

Mechanically inclined.

Strong problem solving skills.

Commitment to working safely coupled with strong communication & interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently with little supervision.

Shift work is required.

Organizational and planning skills as well as proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
