Bus Driver

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid Mississippi driver's license, state certificate as Bus Driver, Successful completion of bs Drivers' training, disciplinary ability, able to perform preventive maintenance checks.

Currently hold or be willing to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and "P" endorsements.

Must pass police background records check.

Must be willing to submit to and pass drug screening.

Must be 18 years of age.

Have no known medical history or clinical diagnosis of any condition that could be detrimental to the safety of the students that will be transported.

Good health, sight, and hearing; numerical record-keeping skill, maturity of judgment; emotional stability; concern for the welfare of students; even temperament; patience; good moral character; initiative.

REPORTS TO:

Transportation Director; works under general direction except when specific instructions are provided.

SUPERVISES:

Bus Monitor when assigned to bus; Students while they are on the bus; the capacity of the bus may be as high as 71 students.

GUIDELINES USED:

Direction from Transportation Director; assistance from Principal, meeting of Bus Drivers, annual training, Bus Drivers' Handbook, Mississippi traffic laws, personal experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs daily mechanical inspection of bus, checking for damage and wear; inspection includes lights, tires, oil, radiator, seats, and all glass; reports mechanical problems to bus shop; contacts bus shop in case of breakdowns; reports all accidents.

When starting the bus, routinely checks oil, brakes, voltage, temperature, lights, and gas gauges; calls bus shop if bus does not start.

Clears windshield, rear window, and side windows daily; cleans inside of bus regularly; cleaning includes sweeping and removal of trash; cleans outside of bus regularly.

Drives assigned bus route according to schedule; picks up only authorized students and drops them off only at designated bus stops; assists students as needed to cross road; helps students as needed to enter and leave bus; arrives on time at end of day to load students.

Maintains safe and orderly student conducts on the bus; ensures that students remain seated; may assign seats to individual students; completes bus conduct reports as necessary and submits these to the Principal.

Operates bus safely at all times; obeys all traffic laws; uses flashing lights and stop sign at each bus stop; acts promptly in emergency situations.

Completes and submits reports of students as requested.

Attends meetings as required.

Obtains substitute bus driver if Director is absent.

Other duties as assigned by Director.
